Every ASCP BOC examination includes a laboratory operations content area that tests examinees on quality-related topics, such as CQI, Individualized Quality Control Plan (IQCP), point-of-care testing (POCT), risk management/medical-legal issues, proficiency testing, competency assessments, and accreditation standards. Hispanic Heritage Month spotlight: Lumar Alves, MLS(ASCPi)cmSMicm, Chair, ASCP BOC Brazil Advisory Board.

When asked what Hispanic heritage means to him, Lumar Alves, MLS(ASCPi)cmSMicm said, "Hispanic heritage means celebrating my culture, my family’s journey, and the values that have shaped who I am. As a medical laboratory scientist (MLS), it also reminds me of the importance of diversity in healthcare and of providing equitable, compassionate care to every patient. I’m proud to represent my community while contributing to better health outcomes through my work."

Lumar went on to say, “Representing Hispanic heritage in the laboratory feels very meaningful. My heritage has taught me the importance of resilience, hard work, and community — values that I bring to my work every day. Being able to represent my culture while making a difference in patients’ lives is something I’m truly proud of.
