2026 marks 20 years of ASCPi.

For this milestone, we take a look back at the first ever ASCPi examination, highlighting its significance and the role it played in advancing credentialing excellence, professional growth, and patient-centered laboratory medicine around the world. South Korea was the first country where ASCPi credentials were offered and the first ASCPi examination was administered there on November 21, 2006, for the MLS(ASCPi) credential.

As of July 30, 2026, 33,535 laboratory professionals have earned an ASCPi credential. With credentials recognized worldwide, the ASCP BOC helps laboratory professionals prepare for and advance successful careers in laboratory medicine, pathology, and adjacent specialties.

The ASCP BOC welcomes the Cytology Examination Committee to their annual meeting. According to Dr. Keisha Burnett, SCT(ASCP)cm, “The most rewarding aspect of practicing cytology is knowing I am making a positive impact on women’s health. The Pap test has dramatically lowered the incidence of cervical cancer in the United States, and I am proud to be a part of contributing my knowledge and technical skill to the success of this test. I also love being the first laboratory professional to look at a patient’s sample under the microscope and giving my preliminary cytologic interpretation.” To learn more on how you can make a positive impact as an ASCP BOC-credentialed cytologist by earning your CT(ASCP) or CT(ASCPi), SCT(ASCP) or SCT(ASCPi), or CTgyn(ASCPi) credential, click https://bit.ly/4aSESWR.
