Launched in 2023 and supported by the American Rescue Plan Act, Cook County Sun and Save set out to expand access to renewable energy for income-eligible Cook County homeowners by providing no-cost solar panel installations.

Various public and private partners including 360 Energy Group, Cook County Department of Environment and Sustainability, and EnergySense Resilience Center came together around this program to help residents save on energy costs and reduce carbon emissions. As of now, Cook County Sun and Save has installed 62 Solar Projects across the Chicagoland area, with many more in progress.

As the program advances toward its goal, Sun and Save continues to slash utility bills and make renewable energy accessible to homeowners throughout the county.

The annual Clean Jobs Midwest Report has ranked Illinois fifth in the nation for clean energy job creation, adding 3,724 jobs last year. One out of every ten new jobs in Illinois in 2024 were in the clean energy industry according to the report, placing Illinois as the frontrunner among Midwestern states for job growth in solar, wind, batteries, energy efficiency, storage and grid, and other clean energy subsectors. These fields continued to outpace the broader economy, and have the heaviest presence in Cook County, with more than 56,000 clean energy workers.

ComEd and Nicor Gas are collaborating to provide advanced energy efficiency certifications to recent graduates of their Market Development Initiative (MDI). This program offers training and certifications to help new and experienced professionals, with a focus on students from diverse and local backgrounds, succeed in the energy efficiency industry. Recent MDI graduates are now eligible to earn Building Performance Institute (BPI) certifications, allowing them to perform energy modeling, building analysis, and data evaluation to make high-impact efficiency recommendations. According to Kelly Lena, director of energy efficiency services at Nicor Gas:

“Our goal is to equip MDI graduates with the necessary skills to succeed in this growing industry. The additional training will enhance their ability to make a significant impact in the industry while delivering essential weatherization services to the communities that need them the most."

Last week, the Illinois EPA (IEPA) secured nearly $15 million in federal funding for energy efficiency projects in disadvantaged communities. The grant is sourced from The Energy Efficiency Revolving Loan Fund, and will be administered by The IEPA’s Office of Energy and the Illinois Finance Authority’s Climate Bank. The grant is intended to stimulate energy efficiency projects in low income communities that may have stalled due to lack of funds, as well as to propel Illinois’ broader climate and sustainability goals.

Consumers and governments all over the world are taking energy efficiency and sustainability seriously. If you’re a commercial building owner, utility, or state agency that wants to reduce your carbon footprint and make the most of your energy resources, contact 360 Energy Group at [email protected].

The IFA will use EE RLF program funding to establish a sustainable energy efficiency revolving loan fund focused on Equity Investment Eligible Communities and federally designated Disadvantaged Communities.

Reuters: The International Energy Agency (IEA) released a report last Wednesday calling on countries to double the adoption of energy efficiency measures if global climate targets are to be met.

"The world’s climate ambitions hinge on our ability to make the global energy system much more efficient," said IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol. "If governments want to keep the 1.5-degree Celsius goal within reach while supporting energy security, doubling energy efficiency progress this decade is critical”.

In 2022, energy use was about 2% more efficient globally than it was in 2021. However, in 2023, that yearly improvement dropped to 1.3%. Energy efficiency needs to improve at a rate of 4% a year for climate targets to be met, the IEA said.

If you’re a property owner interested in minimizing energy waste and maximizing the utility of your existing energy resources, 360 Energy Group has the services and relevant experience to fit your needs. Email us at [email protected] to learn more.

Countries must double the pace of measures to improve energy efficiency if global climate targets are to be met, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said in a report on Wednesday.

A new column from Reuters’ Oliver Balch has articulated clearly why energy efficiency should have a central role in energy transition. He points to the major contributions of the building sector to carbon emissions, quicker decarbonization gains compared to renewables in many parts of the world, and other factors as good reasons for foregrounding efficiency. Widespread renewable adoption may represent a dramatic shift into a fossil-fuel free world after major obstacles are overcome, but a demand-side emphasis on efficiency will slowly and steadily deliver results. On Tuesday, Senate Bill 240 passed the House Judiciary Committee. Introduced by State Senator Sara Feigenholtz, it would require any new construction of single-family homes and multi-unit residential buildings to include basic infrastructure for electric vehicle (EV) charging. It obligates at least one electric vehicle capable parking space per each residential unit that has dedicated parking. The bill is headed next to the Senate floor.

Transportation is the largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in Illinois, and this bill will encourage wider EV adoption if signed into law. 360 Energy Group is involved in transportation electrification and is excited to continue this crucial work into the future. A new Department of Energy (DOE) proposal, announced on December 28th and covered by Utility Drive, would raise the energy efficiency standard for distribution transformers by 2027. This new rule would reduce emissions and potentially save consumers $15 billion over 30 years, according to DOE numbers. Most electricity generated by power plants is distributed by transformers to reduce the voltage before it enters residential or commercial buildings.

Andrew deLaski, executive director of the Appliance Standards Awareness Project, backed the change in a public statement. “Most distribution transformers today use outdated technology that wastes electricity before it even gets to our homes and businesses. DOE’s change in standards would ensure all new models “minimize waste and use materials with a robust long term supply.”

If you’re a property owner interested in minimizing energy waste and maximizing the utility of your existing energy resources, 360 Energy Group has the services and relevant experience to fit your needs. Email us at [email protected] to learn more.

Because so much electricity passes through transformers, experts say that even small efficiency improvements can significantly reduce emissions and create savings.

A news item last week from the International Energy Agency (IEA) illuminated an important trend: global energy efficiency progress is accelerating, after many years of slow growth. Fuel supply disruptions this year, stemming mainly from the Russian invasion of Ukraine, have pressured governments and consumers into adopting various energy-saving measures. Worldwide investments in energy efficiency – such as building retrofitting and renovation, electric vehicle and public transportation infrastructure have increased by 16% since 2021, according to recent market reporting by the IEA.

As the energy efficiency market grows and fuel supply issues persist, now is a great time to make the most out of your energy resources as a small business or commercial property owner. For retrofitting services, energy analysis and more, contact 360 Energy Group at [email protected].
