Fraunhofer, a German solar energy research institute, has just recorded an unprecedented level of efficiency in a solar cell. Through a triple layer solar cell of their design they managed capture 41.1% of a set amount of solar energy.
The record was set while absorbing a solar energy concentration of 454 times that of sunlight. The concentration of solar energy is crucial to the success of this project since the production of these triple layer cells are so expensive. But by being able to absorb a higher percentage of light they can benefit from the use of mirrors and lenses to increase the concentration.
Concentrix Solar has been working with Fraunhofer on this project. Concentrix is one of the leading solar companies known for using mirrors and lenses for concentration. By way of example, their best solar panels have an efficiency rate of 27.2%.
So it seems the only question now, is whether Fraunhofer can successfully commercialize their solar panels and make them cost effective.
