Great unbiased non-political overview: 3 Recent Trump Administration HVAC Actions Explained: Tariffs, IRA freeze, and postponed efficiency standards will affect HVAC industry

President Trump’s administration has made a lot of HVAC news in his first month on the job. Here is a look at what that means for HVAC contractors, distributors, and manufacturers.

Preventative Maintenance WORKS! A peer-reviewed study published in Energy and Buildings, spanning multiple climate zones, has found a professional HVAC cleaning can reduce fan and blower energy consumption by 41-60% while increasing supply airflow by up to 46%. The research, conducted across diverse environmental conditions, represents the first large-scale analysis of HVAC cleaning as an energy-saving intervention.

"The question was, does cleaning the duct really help in terms of energy? And the answer is yes," explained Dr. Mark Hernandez, P.E., a professor at the University of Colorado Boulder and one of the study's authors.

"When you clean the ductwork, the VAV response time and system stability is way better," Hernandez notes. "The dirty system had the VAVs opening and shutting and opening and shutting. But after cleaning, they were all opening together, all closing together. It behaved like a symphony orchestra."

Energy-efficiency interventions are crucial for sustainable building operations to accommodate emerging indoor air quality (IAQ) criteria into their e…

Direct gas-fired makeup air units from Greenheck Fan Corp. now use R-454B, an A2L refrigerant with a low GWP that complies with mandates from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

R-454B has mild flammability potential, so the units underwent third-party testing from Intertek for all relevant product safety standards, including UL 60335-2-40. The tests certified that the refrigerant leak-detection and -mitigation systems are operating at full effectiveness, according to Greenheck.

📢 Big News in the HVAC World!

Morgan Stanley is selling its HVAC company, Sila Services, to Goldman Sachs' private equity arm. The deal highlights the ongoing trend of private equity firms investing in HVAC businesses due to steady cash flow and essential services like heating, cooling, and plumbing.

💰 While exact numbers weren't shared, sources estimate Sila’s value around $1.5 billion, debt included. With rising demand for eco-friendly HVAC solutions due to construction growth and stricter environmental regulations, the sector's deal activity rose nearly 7% this year.

The Sila team, which covers several dozen subsidiary brands in the mid- to northeast, will stay on board, and layoffs aren't expected.

Carrier recently unveiled a groundbreaking next-gen HVAC system during Climate Week NYC. The system, inspired by hybrid car technology, integrates lithium-ion battery backup to help homeowners save on energy costs while enhancing grid resiliency. By charging when energy prices are low and letting the system run on batteries during peak demand, this approach helps reduce the strain on the grid, especially during extreme weather.

“We're basically integrating onboard energy storage — lithium-ion batteries — in the heart of our HVAC units,” said Hakan Yilmaz, senior vice president and chief technology and sustainability officer at Carrier. The batteries will drive the HVAC units for “about two hours,” Yilmaz added — “not indefinitely.”

Carrier's hybrid HVAC aims to address one of the biggest hurdles to electrification and provides a scalable solution to grid stress, offering homeowners uninterrupted comfort and substantial savings. With cybersecurity at its core, this innovation could support up to 25 gigawatts of grid capacity if scaled to 10 million homes, a step toward a net-zero future.
