Installed in 2025.
Compressor completely cooked in 2026.

Today we diagnosed a walk-in cooler with a catastrophic compressor burnout. Breaker tripped instantly on startup. Compressor shell severely overheated and heat-stressed. Acid confirmed throughout the refrigeration system.

What makes this worse?

The unit wiring and safeties had been altered outside of manufacturer specifications.

This is exactly why following manufacturer startup procedures and wiring diagrams matters.

Safety controls are there to protect the compressor.

When safeties are bypassed, removed, or improperly wired, the compressor loses its protection against:

* High head pressure
* Low charge conditions
* Overheating
* Short cycling
* Electrical stress
* Floodback
* Internal thermal damage

The result?

A compressor that literally cooks itself from the inside out.

And once acid forms in the system, the damage spreads through the entire refrigeration circuit.

This wasn’t an old system.
This was a nearly new installation.

Too many installations are being rushed:

* No nitrogen while brazing
* No proper evacuation
* No verified decay test
* No deep vacuum below 500 microns
* Controls altered outside manufacturer specifications

Then everyone wonders why compressors fail a year later.

Anybody can make equipment run.

Professional refrigeration work means installing equipment the way the manufacturer engineered it to operate.

500 microns matters.
Factory wiring matters.
Safety controls matter.

Because when shortcuts are taken during installation, the customer pays for it later.

A few before and after shots from a recent commercial refrigeration project.

The existing system had aging equipment, deteriorated piping, and years of rooftop patchwork. After the new roof was completed, our team installed new condensing units, a new Russell evaporator, new piping, disconnects, and cleaned up the entire layout.

One thing that matters to us is making installs serviceable for the next technician that has to work on it. Clean piping, organized conduit, proper supports, and accessible equipment go a long way over the life of a system.

Proud of the team on this one. The transformation came out clean.

What’s crazy to me…
Is that most of the emergencies we respond to in the middle of the night could have been prevented.
Last night, we were called out to a walk-in freezer down at a post-acute facility — right as a large food delivery was arriving.
When we got there, we found:
• Compressor tripped on internal overload — extremely overheated
• High head pressure condition
• Condenser coil completely impacted
• System unable to reject heat
The unit was essentially cooking itself.
We had to clean the condenser coil multiple times just to restore airflow and bring the system back to a stable condition — in the middle of the night.
Once everything cooled down and we could properly evaluate the system, we also found a failing temperature control.
Here’s the part that matters:
None of this failed overnight.
It built up over time.
Restricted airflow → higher pressures → overheating → shutdown.
And it always seems to happen at the worst possible moment.
The difference isn’t complicated:
👉 Planned maintenance during the day
vs
👉 Emergency repairs in the middle of the night
One is controlled.
The other is costly, stressful, and disruptive.
We had Provided Proposals for PM but choose not to move forward. The Crazy thing is last night call cost close to what he would paid for PM annually.

Most Facility Managers and Owners already have a PM plan.
But here’s the real question…
Is it actually preventing breakdowns?
I get called in all the time after something fails — and almost every time, the building was “on a maintenance plan.”
The issue isn’t having a PM contract.
It’s the quality of the maintenance.
• Coils not being cleaned properly
• Drain lines not being flushed
• Belts not being replaced before they fail
• No real tracking of equipment condition
That’s not preventive maintenance. That’s just routine visits.
A real PM plan should reduce breakdowns, lower energy costs, and extend equipment life.
If it’s not doing that… it’s not doing its job.

⚠️ Homeowners: Don’t let a “cheap HVAC install” cost you more later

If you’re getting bids to replace your AC or heating system, here’s something most people don’t realize:

In California, it is **required by law** to have a **mechanical permit and city inspection** for HVAC replacements. Most systems also require **HERS/ECC testing** to verify the system is installed and operating correctly.

If a contractor is offering a much lower price, ask yourself why.

🚩 Are they pulling a permit?
🚩 Will the city inspect the installation?
🚩 Are required energy compliance tests included?

If the answer is no:

* The installation is **not legal**
* It can create **serious issues when selling your home**
* You may have **no protection if something goes wrong**
* And the system may **not be installed safely or correctly**

This is especially important now with **new A2L refrigerants**, which are **mildly flammable**. Proper installation, verification, and inspection are not optional—they are critical for safety.

A properly installed HVAC system isn’t just about comfort—it’s about **protecting your home, your investment, and your family**.

Always hire a licensed contractor who pulls permits, follows code, and stands behind their work.

If a price seems too good to be true, it usually is.

Before & After – Ice Machine Deep Clean
This is more common than people think.
The manager believed this unit was being maintained—but no one had actually been checking it. Heavy buildup, poor drainage, and contamination were all missed.
We fully disassembled the machine, scrubbed all components, cleaned the system, sanitized everything, and reinstalled it properly.
The tubing was already stained from long-term neglect, so it won’t look brand new—but the unit is now clean, safe, and running properly ✅
This is what happens when PMs are rushed or done cheap.
If your equipment isn’t being properly checked, it’s only a matter of time before it turns into a bigger issue.

Another compressor burnout we handled recently…

Most people think you just replace the compressor and you’re good to go.

Not the case.

When a compressor burns out, it leaves behind:
• Burnt oil
• Acid
• Contamination throughout the system

If you don’t clean that out properly, the new compressor can fail way sooner than it should.

On this job, we didn’t just swap the part:
We flushed the system, replaced the drier, and made sure everything was clean before putting it back into operation.

This is the kind of work most customers never see—especially when it’s sitting on a roof.

But it’s also the difference between a repair that lasts… and one that turns into another breakdown.

If you own or manage a business and have had major repairs done recently, it might be worth getting a second look.
