As global interest in nuclear power grows, so does the need for reliable long-term waste containment.

Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in welded storage vessels remains a critical challenge, one that can threaten containment integrity over thousands of years. In our article published in RadWaste Solutions, we revisit how Controlled Plasticity Burnishing (CPB) and Low Plasticity Burnishing (LPB®) extend vessel life far beyond design limits by eliminating tensile stress at the surface.

Originally developed for the Yucca Mountain project, this approach remains highly relevant today as the industry expands clean energy production and reconsiders long-term storage strategies. Read the full article, “Securing the Future,” published by the American Nuclear Society.

Tension is nearly always present in the heat affected zone of welds. Read how optimized burnishing relieves it in this interview with our VP of Operations.

The act of welding induces stress into the material, so metal fabricators employ various methods to mitigate it. One technique is low-plasticity burnishing, a high-tech cousin of the old-school burnishing process.
