The Shepherd Color Company

The Shepherd Color Company The Shepherd Color Company is a fourth-generation, family-owned business dedicated to being a world-

Our roots originate in the 1920s ceramics industry, where we supplied colors for porcelain enamels. By the early 1960s, our product line had expanded to a full range of complex inorganic color pigments for the premium coatings and plastics markets. Today, our products are used in many diverse applications, especially where performance is critical under the most extreme conditions. In 1980, The She

pherd Color Company relocated to new and modern facilities in Cincinnati, Ohio. Our success has been built upon the fundamental belief that exemplary character, quality work and customized products brighten the lives of everyone involved. From this location, as well as from sales offices in Brussels, Melbourne and Japan, we supply millions of pounds annually of high-quality pigments to customers around the world.

Today is National Root Beer Float Day, and we're celebrating the rich brown hues behind this iconic summer treat.
At Shepherd Color, color is our business, so we can't help but see this classic treat through a pigment lens. Root beer floats instantly remind us of Brown 10P850, Brown 10P857, and Brown 19, just a few of the pigments in our portfolio.

Shepherd Color's NTP Yellow and RTZ Orange pigments allow coatings and plastics manufacturers to achieve vibrant, stable shades without sacrificing opacity. Learn how these advanced pigment chemistries push the boundaries of what is achievable in high-performance color.

Developing Pigments that Meet Durability and Opacity Requirements Achieving high-performance color in demanding applications has historically required compromise. In the middle yellow, formulators have often been forced to choose between the brightness of organic pigments and the durability and opac...

Your coating is only as strong as the pigments behind it. If your product is exposed to the elements, you already know the risks: fading, warping, and peeling which ultimately equals lost performance and brand credibility. That’s where high-performance Shepherd Color pigments make a real difference.

Unlike traditional pigments, Shepherd’s complex inorganic color pigments are engineered to withstand harsh UV exposure, extreme temperatures, and aggressive environments. The result? Coatings and materials that hold their color, integrity, and adhesion for the long haul.

If you’re designing products that need to perform outdoors or in tough environments, choosing the right pigment isn’t a small detail, it’s an advantage.

Build it to last. Start with the right pigments. https://www.shepherdcolor.com/

Shepherd Color's infrared reflective pigments aren't just regular pigments, they are solutions in action. From reflecting harmful rays and keeping the surfaces cooler (reducing warping), to helping combat the urban island heat effect, to enabling recyclability in black plastics, our innovative IR black pigments are rethinking what's possible. It's about solving real-world challenges and giving new life to modern applications. Read more about our IR black pigments: https://ow.ly/OQfr50Z7LNZ

Creating a Solution to a Problem When the laser was first invented in the 1960s, it was more of an experiment to validate some of Einstein's theories. At first, it was called a 'solution in search of a problem'- but did it ever find problems to solve! Modern life wouldn't be possible without lasers....

Yesterday, teammates from the Shepherd Material Science Companies attended the 2026 Adopt A Class Partnership Breakfast, where we were honored to be nominated for the Best Overall Partner Award. In addition, our own Information Systems Infrastructure Manager, Chris Buelter, was nominated as Team Leader of the Year. While we did not take home these two awards, we are incredibly grateful to be recognized among so many organizations and team leads who make a meaningful difference in the lives of local students. The absolute honor was watching the Shepherd Color 5th grade class teacher, Jani Moore, take home one of the Teacher of the Year awards!

Adopt A Class connects businesses with students in under-resourced schools, fostering mentorship, career awareness, and real-world learning opportunities that help prepare students for future success.

This was Shepherd Color's first year participating in Adopt A Class, where we were proud to have served one of the 5th grade classes at Brookwood Elementary in Hamilton. During our year here, we mentored kids through various activities, including hands-on experiments in a classroom setting, and ended the year with an onsite tour of our facility, where the class was happy to take a photo with our PIGment The Pig! Our team saw first-hand how the Adopt A Class organization positively impacts our community by inspiring curiosity, confidence, and a love of learning in the next generation.

Cheers to our first year, and many more to come!
