It’s SPRINGTIME and a person’s fancy turns to FLYING! OK, maybe not real flying, but how about Radio Control (R/C) flying?

The Cincinnati Silent Flyers (CSF) will begin its R/C training in a few weeks. During this training, the instructors will explain components of plane, basic aerodynamics of flight, how the transmitter (TX) control affects the flight of the plane and offer three free hands-on flights. We use our own aircraft, transmitters and batteries for the flights, so there is nothing to purchase!

The CSF is the only R/C flying club in Hamilton County that flies only aircraft powered by rechargeable batteries. The aircraft are clean and quiet. As a member of the Academy of Model Aeronautics flying organization, we abide by their rules and regulations and are covered by their liability insurance. We are located near the intersection of Springdale and Mill Roads in Springfield Township.

Many, Many moons ago, I wanted to learn how to fly RC. This was back in the Chris Chianeli days of Radio Control Hobbies.

He had an episode on a new plane - the Wingo. It was a three-channel, foam, and brushed motor designed to run on NiCad batteries. I bought one and proceeded to assemble it. Headed out to a local school yard and proceeded to hit the ground. Repaired, hit ground, etc.

About that time, I realized the old GCRCC runway was still there with more flying room and approached Stonebridge. After a few more attempts I knew I was getting close so I ended up buying a new Wingo. Few more attempts and was getting halfway decent at keeping from hitting the ground unexpectedly. That memento went into the "Harness Aviation Museum" as I collected more and more planes.

A few weeks ago, I saw another Wingo advertising and thought ".. if it could teach me to fly, it'd be good for new students." Ordered one and started putting it together.

About that time, we were talking about a "Flight Nite" at the airfield. I didn't have a night flyer, so I thought "wonder if I could put lights on the Wingo"?

After some experimenting, and a few puffs of smoke, attached are the pics. Still have a little cleaning up to do, but the lights are controlled through Channel 5, Gear channel so I can turn on or off any time.

Last night was an incredibly GREAT evening to be at the airfield!! The weather was PERFECT (calm winds, cool temperatures, clear skies) camaraderie top notch with warm and friendly harassment, and we all went home with the same number of pieces...
