It’s the quiet moments in the NICU that can feel the heaviest.

The middle of the night silence, the glow of the monitors, the hum of machines while you sit there hoping you’re doing all the right things. You are doing enough. Showing up is one of the most powerful things a parent can do. Prolacta's parent resources are here to help you understand your baby's nutritional care and support conversations with your healthcare team.

September is NICU Awareness Month.

Approximately 36,000 babies are born in the U.S. each year weighing less than 2.75 lbs. Some are born at 24 weeks, barely past the threshold of viability. Their first home is the incubator. Their first feeds come through tubes. Their earliest days unfold in a world most people never see.

The NICU teams who care for them, nurses, neonatologists, dietitians, and respiratory therapists, are extraordinary. And the families who show up every day are too.

This month, we will be sharing resources, evidence, and stories from the NICU. Because awareness is a starting point, not a finish line.

60,000 ounces. One donor. Countless babies helped.

Alia never expected to become a milk donor. But after discovering she had an oversupply, she chose to continue pumping, turning something unexpected into a way to help others.

Throughout her breastfeeding journey with three children, she donated more than 60,000 ounces, supporting fragile NICU infants with every ounce. Her family became part of the journey, cheering her on and understanding the impact of what she was doing.

September is NICU Awareness Month. And this year, we have important things to share.

Each year, more than 36,000 babies in the U.S. are born weighing less than 2.75 lbs. They are among the most fragile patients in any hospital, cared for by dedicated NICU teams.

In September, we’re focusing on what matters most: the science, the care, and the families behind it.

Behind every Prolacta product is a person who chooses to give something extraordinary.

Women across the U.S. pump, complete screenings, and ship their milk so NICU babies can receive a 100% human milk-based diet.

Each donation is tested 20+ times and processed in FDA-regulated facilities, because these infants need the highest level of care.

To every donor: thank you.

When you’re feeding the most vulnerable infants, there is no compromise to safety and there’s no margin for error in how human milk is processed.

Every Prolacta product starts with donated breast milk. Before it reaches the NICU:
- Donors complete comprehensive health screening: physician verification, blood testing, lifestyle review
- Each donation undergoes 20+ validated tests
- Products are processed in FDA-regulated, pharmaceutical-grade facilities
- Vat pasteurization best preserves bioactivity while ensuring safety
- Prolacta is the only human milk nutrition provider with DNA-verified donor milk

NICU Tip:
It can feel like the NICU comes with a language you’re expected to learn overnight.

Gestational age. Corrected age. TPN. Bradycardia. NEC. Desaturation. These are terms parents learn in real time, often while scared, sleep-deprived, and sitting next to a baby under warming lights.

Here are some perfectly acceptable questions to slow down the conversation and help you understand more about your baby’s care:
- “Can you walk me through that one more time?”
- “What does that mean for my baby right now?”
- “Can you write that down to help me remember it?”
- “What’s the most important thing for me to understand today?”
- “If I think of another question, is there someone I can ask?”

You are not expected to absorb everything at once. You are a parent learning as fast as you can for a baby who needs you.

Feeling overwhelmed in the NICU? Start with these questions.

There is a lot of information coming at you at once, and it can be hard to know what to ask, especially when you are exhausted and worried. These questions are a great starting point:

- What is my baby eating today?
- What is being added to my breast milk?
- Is a 100% human milk-based fortification option available?
- How might my baby's feeding plan change as they grow?
- What can I do to be more involved in my baby's care?

Write them down. Ask them during rounds. Every answer gives you one more piece of the picture.

World Breastfeeding Week may be ending, but for NICU parents, the work continues.
If you’re pumping, tube feeding, or fighting to protect your supply for a baby in the NICU, what you’re doing matters more than you know.

That effort is powerful.

Human milk is especially important for premature infants, delivering protective nutrients formula can’t replicate. And when more nutrition is needed, there are fortifier options that keep their diet 100% human milk-based (instead of cow milk-based).

You can ask your care team about them. We can help you navigate these conversations.

Pumping for a baby you can’t always be close to is one of the quietest, strongest acts of love there is.

World Breastfeeding Week often celebrates the nursing bond, but for NICU parents, it can look and feel very different.

Instead of nursing sessions, it’s pumping every few hours for a baby you can’t always hold. It’s watching tiny amounts collect in a bottle and wondering if it’s enough.

And it is enough.

Your milk contains antibodies and protective nutrients made specifically for your baby. When your baby needs more than breast milk alone can provide, an entirely human milk-based fortifier is available. Ask your care team if this option may be right for your baby.
