Record number of lambs shorn today! :D

Sheep shearing for fair will be 8am-4pm, Wednesday for breeding ewes, Thursday and Friday for market lambs. Bring a bottle of soap, dish soap or hair shampoo works great, an old bath towel or two and a scrub brush if you have one. Be prepared to get a little wet. :)

Countdown to fair prep week. This is going to be great, guys!

Find out how much your lamb weighs, what and how much feed he/she is getting, plus any additives like Fitter 35, rolled barley or Power Fuel. Read the labels on the feed your lamb is getting and know the % protein and % fat. Calculate your lamb's average daily gain too and get pumped for shearing and other fair prep next week!

IF YOU ARE SHOWING A EWE, GET YOUR EWE PICKS IN!

If you haven't already, it's time for you to stop working your lamb on the halter. The more you practice, the better control you will have of your lamb. The more control you have of your lamb, the better you will do in showmanship. The better you do in showmanship, the more premium money you will earn. Work your lamb without a halter. Its not the end of the world if he gets away at the land lab, but it may well be if it happens at fair.

Lamb's fat cover fills from front to back and top to bottom. See if you can feel how far conditioned your lamb is by feeling for the ribs on its side! The last few closest to his loin will feel bony but the ones behind his elbow shouldn't be! Remember! A properly conditioned market lamb has between .1 and .15 inches of fat!

Don't forget to check the calendar on the NCFFA webpage on Sabin Schellenberg's website to see the dates when you can shear your sheep for county fair!
