I mentioned back when we were framing that the current build had quite a few beams compared to a lot of our previous builds. When we can't bury a beam in a ceiling finding a clean way to wrap it is a must. Since most of our builds utilize LP Smart side or Diamond Kote siding we have an opportunity to continue those materials into the beams. Between using the siding to create the bulk of the beam and trimming it out with 5/4 trim materials we can creat clean, elegant, cohesive beams. We are loving the way the black soffit is giving depth to the white beams on what will become a covered and screened in main floor walk out deck.

Throughout the years we have always worked on different ways to manage nail fin thickness in windows when installing door trims (windows don't seem to bother). When we first started we installed each piece by itself and then used a bar to keep the outside edge at the same elevation as the brickmould side. We then started shimming the perimeter. That turned into pocket screwing frames together and shimming the perimeter. Now we pocket screw and plane the inside edge down. This allows us no shimming, the trim doesn't set further out past the door frame, and we can sit tight against the sheeting.
As a builder we are always changing and learning. The way we started doing it 10 years ago is nowhere near the same way we do it now. Does that make the day one install wrong? Absolutely not. With all things we learn, adapt, change, and evolve.

Some details are just too nice not to share. A well done side wall with a kickout flashing is something to enjoy. Simple little flashing details like drip cap on top of a trim board and a roofer installed kickout flashing are things I love seeing. We also have gotten into a habit of adding a 5/4 board to all of our sidewalls so in the future the roofer who reshingles the house will not have any issues accessing the step shingles.

While laying on the floor after my work out I couldn't help but wonder why I decided not to shoulder, chest, and arm day after hanging ceilings with today.... Then I remembered I used to be 300lbs and if I'm not gonna push myself no one else will. But I know I'm gonna pay for this tomorrow when we finish up ceilings in the garage...

When doing an LP smart side style siding we have always preferred the UL listed electrical box trim. These trims have an incorporated single gang electrical box that accepts an outdoor cover perfectly. We aren't opposed to using an Arlington box but with this style of trim we have just a single or double wire coming out of the wall that's easily liquid flashing or taped. That wire then dives into one of the openings in the box. This way we don't have an entire box cut into the wall resulting in a lower r value in that area due to reduced insulation thickness. Plus these trims have a nice flashing already built into the box.

Flashing the exterior is super easy too. Once the trim is nailed to the sheeting three pieces of zip tape around the box creates a perfect sealed area with our Zip sheeting system.
