a few pics from last week's projects at our industrial machine shop (2nd location):
- Setting up one of our CNC lathes Automatic tool change turret, in preparation of machining a batch of 50 17-4 PH stainless steel prop shaft bearing spacers.
- Machining a 165 lb. block of aluminum for an extreme "off-road" gear-box. The features shown are ~14" diameter and 5" deep. Still have a lot more to cut away before it's done :-)

A few pics of last week's jobs:
Diego disassembled, inspected, and estimated another air-cooled VW engine ... we've been rebuilding VW engines for 63 yrs. We know a thing or two about them :-)

Clint balanced another Big block Chevy 454 crank.

Tony, surfaces another cylinder head on our 75MPH T&S Machines and Tools, Inc. head surfacer. This machine uses either CBN (Cubic-Boron-Nitride, the 2nd hardest material known) or PCD (Poly-Crystalline Diamond) cutters to produce the proper surface finish and super-flat precision required for modern day engines.

We still work on quite a few classic cast iron British engines ...this Austin-Healey is getting machined for new cylinder sleeves.
Trivia: Healy was a body/chassis builder who partnered with many engine/powertrain manufacturers over the years: Riley-Healey, Nash-Healey, Austin-Healey, & Jensen-Healey. Only ~500 Nash-Healey models were built from 1950-54. They're the rarest of all Healey cars. About 6 yrs ago, we manufactured new reproduction suspension mounts for a 1953 Nash-Healey, which sold for ~$133k a year later. In the 1950's TV series, Superman, Clark Kent drove a Nash-Healey sportscar.)

POV: When you have your nose to the grindstone. Up close look at grinding a V8 crankshaft - our CG250Van Norman crank grind is a massive machine, weight a bit over 10,000 lbs. In the world of crank grinding, greater mass = precision and a chatter-free surface finish. Additionally, it's large 36" diameter grinding wheel also ensures proper journal geometry and surface finish...We are one of only a few shops in the area equipped to straighten, grind, polish & re-balancing crankshafts in-house.

It's been 5 months since a DUI driver wiped out our shop's exterior sign. We've been going "round & round" with his insurance company, Bristol West - a part of the Farmers Insurance Group. From our experience, it's our opinion, they are the worst in processing a claim; and have the rudest adjusters/claim reps. To avoid further delay, we settled for about 60% of actual repacement cost - enough to purchase the concrete, structural steel, sign support frame, paint, hardware, etc. We have to do the actual construction/erection ourselves...whenever we can find time between machining jobs. Eric and his crew managed to get the holes dug, poles set, and concrete poured, last month. A couple of weeks later, Eric welded the support frame in place. Even without a sign, business has been extra good- Many thanks to all of our customers for your support!

A fellow Harley rider's front wheel bearing failed, and severely damaged the hub, causing the new bearing fit too loose...

A fellow Harley rider's front wheel bearing failed, and severely damaged the hub, causing the new bearing fit too loose. A matching new/good used wheel was not readily available, so he asked if we could repair his wheel. Click the pics for details on how Eric "rescued" this wheel.

A couple more "git'r done" jobs from last week 🙂
- Mitsch finished prepares to diamond hone the cylinders on another 5.9L Cummins block on our Sunnen SV10. Mitsch has the experience to make it look soooo easy.
- Tony preps our 75mph T&S Machines and Tools, Inc. surfacing machine. Tony make this machine sing - quickly surfacing cyl heads level and to proper surface finish Ra/Rv/Rp specs.
- Tony is having too much fun with out T&S Machines and Tools, Inc. surfacer - look at that grin. LOL

A few more jobs moving thru the shop: Clint assembling a GM LT1 long block. And a Ford 2.3L SOHC engine. And balancing another Ford 351 Winsor crankshaft/rotating assembly.
Lastly, we ground a stroker crank for Promax Performance.
A bit of trivia: there are only a few engine shops in DFW area that grind crankshaft - we're one of those few. We've been grinding crankshafts for 63 yrs, since 1963.

327 V8 ready for pickup, sitting next to a freshly rebuilt VW Type 4 long block engine. The Type 4 engine shares parts with the later VW Type 2 transporter engines ...both are closely related to the Porsche 914/4 engine.
