Thank you to the Cincinnati State students who visited our facility this morning!

The class joined us for coffee, orange juice, and donuts while Shawn and Tom shared the history of Tisch Environmental and walked through our Hi-Vol air samplers and other monitoring equipment. Afterward, the group toured our R&D department, production building, Zero Air department, and more to see how our equipment comes together.

They also had the chance to meet our co-founder, Jim Tisch, talk about PFAS, and get a sneak peek at some new products and developments on the horizon.

If you were in North Toledo last night, the fog outside your window may not have been just fog.

Late Tuesday night, a hazardous materials release was reported near Progress Avenue and Enterprise Boulevard. Officials have since identified the chemical as glycidyl methacrylate, an industrial chemical used in plastics, paints, and coatings. As of this morning, a 1-mile evacuation order and a 3-mile shelter-in-place order remain in effect.

Dense fog has made it hard to tell what’s in the air, and officials are asking residents not to judge conditions by how the air looks. If you’re in the shelter-in-place area:
- Stay indoors and keep pets inside
- Close all windows and doors
- Turn off heating, cooling, and ventilation systems that pull in outside air
- Contact a medical professional if you think you’re reacting to exposure
- Call 911 if you’re having trouble breathing

Our team is following this situation closely. For the most current updates, please rely on Toledo Fire & Rescue, the City of Toledo, and Lucas County Emergency Management.

Earlier this year, researchers at Chung Shan Medical University in Taiwan published a peer-reviewed study examining the biological effects of PM2.5 collected from an active earthwork and demolition site.

The findings were significant. Construction-generated fine particulate matter, particularly during the mud work phase, was shown to enhance breast cancer cell proliferation, migration, and invasion in laboratory testing. The mechanism is tied to elevated water-soluble transition metals (copper, nickel, and lead) that concentrate in construction-derived PM2.5 at levels well above typical urban ambient air.

The instrument used to collect those samples continuously over 24 months was a Tisch Environmental TE-6070 high-volume PM2.5 sampler. Positioned at worker breathing zone height. Running around the clock. Built in Cleves, Ohio.

We don't share this to promote ourselves. We share it because this is exactly why this work matters. The data that drives research like this starts with someone putting the right equipment in the field and letting it run.

Construction workers are still an underleveraged population in occupational health research. Studies like this one are starting to change that.

Another employee spotlight, another Tom! This month it's Tom Platter, and if you've ever stopped by our booth at a conference or trade show, there's a good chance you've already met him.

Tom is our Director of Outside Sales, and since joining us in February 2024, he's spent much of his time on the road representing Tisch Environmental at events across the country and building relationships with the customers who trust us with their air quality monitoring needs.

Did you know there's a hole in the sky over Antarctica? 🌍

It's been there since the 1980s, but here's the good news: it's shrinking. September 16 is World Ozone Day, and this year marks something worth celebrating, 10 years since the Kigali Amendment, a global agreement that's helped phase out over 99% of the chemicals that were damaging our ozone layer.

There's actually a pretty interesting twist in this story too. The chemicals that first replaced the ozone-damaging ones turned out to be a problem for the climate instead. It took another global agreement to fix that gap.
