152 million Americans are breathing air that earned a failing grade. Nearly half of them are children.
Kids breathe more air relative to their body size than adults. Their lungs are still developing. They spend more time outside. And they don't get a say in the air quality around them.
The American Lung Association just released its 2026 State of the Air report, and the numbers are hard to look away from.
Here's a question worth asking though: how much of that grade comes from continuous, light-scatter monitors that tend to read high, compared to FRM filter-based instruments, like the Wilbur, which are still the most accurate method we have. That difference matters when the data is what drives real decisions.
Closer to home, Cincinnati ranks 17th worst in the country for year-round air quality.
