• For split heat pump (meaning part of the unit is outside and the other part is inside / attic / crawlspace)
o Turn unit to “Emergency Heat” at the thermostat while winter weather is falling (this protects the outdoor coil from freezing up)
o Soon as winter weather has passed, turn unit back to regular heat at the thermostat.
• For package heat pumps (meaning entire unit is outside)
o Turn unit to emergency heat at the thermostat while winter weather is falling (this protects the outdoor coil from freezing up)
o Soon as winter weather has passed, turn unit back to regular heat at the thermostat.
• Gas package units (meaning entire unit is outside but heat runs on gas) should be alright and no precautionary measures needed
• For ALL heat pumps, if you happen to see “steam” or “smoke” coming from the top of the outdoor unit, ITS OK!! That’s only the system in defrost mode.
• Placing a tarp, card board, etc. on the top of the heat pump systems could help keep the ice from accumulating on the fan blades, which weigh them down. Once winter weather has passed, the tarp, card board, or etc. can be removed.
• Make sure air filters are clean.
• Remember your unit is a piece of machinery, if you set your thermostat to 75+ degrees, it WILL run constantly trying to reach and maintain that setting when it is this cold outside.
• On that note, with the outdoor temperatures set to be in the teens and 20s, please DO NOT set your thermostat to 75+ degrees; (1) do not expect the unit not to run day and night, (2) chances are the unit will NOT reach that thermostat setting with the outdoor temperatures being that cold.
• The exact same temperature heat and air flow blows through vents whether your thermostat is on 65 or 85. ZERO DIFFERENCE
• Our service technicians will be available depending on road conditions. (Mainly, we are not going to risk our employee’s safety, please don’t expect our employees to drive in bad road conditions if you yourself aren’t willing too)
• If you call for a service call and have left a message or have already talked to the office or a technician, please refrain from calling multiple times as this tends to unnecessarily delay services and tie up phone lines for others.
