A Tampa plumber called us after spending $11,000 on Google Ads in three months with almost nothing to show for it.
He was getting clicks. Plenty of them. The problem: half the calls came from people 40 minutes away in counties he didn't even service. The other half were price shoppers who'd already called six other plumbers.
The culprit was a 25-mile radius around his shop. Sounds reasonable. It also pulled in two entire counties where he had no licensed contractors and couldn't legally take the job.
And the wasted spend wasn't even the worst part. Every far-away lead that bailed taught Google his business had a low conversion rate. Quality score dropped, cost per click went up, and the few good leads he did get cost three times what they should have.
If you run a service business, here's what we see over and over:
📍 You're paying the same $9 for a click from 2 miles away as one from 18 miles away. One books 40% of the time. The other, maybe 10%.
📍 Your ad says the same thing everywhere. One cleaning company we set up with dynamic location insertion went from a 4.1% to 6.8% click-through rate in three weeks. Same budget, same keywords.
📍 You're tracking cost per call instead of cost per booked job by zip code. One plumber thought he was paying $22 a lead. His real number was $88.
The fix is usually a 30-minute audit: pull your last 50 completed jobs, map them, and compare that to where your ads are actually running. If 80% of your work is within 8 miles and you're targeting 20, you know where the money's going.
We wrote up all seven tactics, including the multi-location trap that sends your new customers to your old shop:
