We are pleased to share the video of MTA C&D President Jamie Torres-Springer interviewing our Assistant Project Manager, Nicole DeFilippi. Nicole and her team are responsible for the construction work underway at 86th Street Station to bring the station into full ADA compliance. The station is one of 13 included in OHLA USA’s $581 million Package 5 – ADA Upgrades at 13 Stations project.

The 86th Street Station project presents a unique set of challenges given the limited space within one of Manhattan’s busiest environments. Creating room for three new elevators required expanding beyond the station’s existing footprint and carefully supporting the surrounding roadway and station structure during excavation.

To make this possible, the project team installed a substantial temporary support system, including steel beams placed through a small opening in the roadway and secured into the bedrock below. This enabled the team to safely excavate for the new elevator shafts while also replacing structural supports that have served the station for more than a century.

Construction Begins on I-95/SW 10th Street Connector, a Progressive Design-Build Project in Florida

Together with its client, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), the joint venture of Prince Contracting and OHLA USA has advanced the I-95/SW 10th Street Connector into the construction phase, with design continuing concurrently.

Last night's demolition of the NW/NE 48th Street Bridge over S.R. 9/I-95 in Deerfield Beach marked a significant milestone for the project. The bridge demolition and subsequent reconstruction are part of an early work package and are components of the broader SW 10th Street Connector scope.

Following 18 months of collaborative planning and design, the team is moving forward with construction while advancing the design, which is expected to reach 60% completion by the end of the year. The project includes widening and improvements along I-95, as well as enhanced connectivity at the SW 10th Street and Hillsboro Boulevard interchanges.

Spanning approximately four miles, the project features reconfigured interchanges, new flyover ramps, and new entrance and exit ramps. It also includes two complementary roadway initiatives along SW 10th Street. Connector lanes will link the Sawgrass Expressway with I-95, improving regional mobility, traffic flow, and congestion relief. Under a separate procurement, local SW 10th Street will be transformed into a "Complete Street," featuring a shared-use path and improved connectivity to adjacent properties and the surrounding roadway network.

Together, these improvements will enhance operations and safety, reduce congestion, and strengthen emergency evacuation routes throughout the area—an important step toward transforming mobility in Broward County.

Partnering with the MTA to Preserve History and Improve Accessibility at Borough Hall Station, Brooklyn, NY

Together with its client and elected officials, OHLA USA’s Judlau Contracting division marked a key milestone in Downtown Brooklyn’s history with a formal announcement of the opening of three new elevators at Borough Hall Subway Station, Brooklyn’s oldest and fourth busiest, with 22,000 riders per day for 4 and 5 subway lines and up to 45,000 riders on the 2, 3, and R subway lines. The elevators, which opened last year to reveal the Borough Hall Station’s first Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Path of Travel, are complemented by extensive state of good repair (SOGR) improvements throughout the transit hub.

These achievements – executed through a design-build contract – are a cornerstone of the 118-year-old station’s comprehensive modernization, blending historic preservation with accessibility for all.

Here’s what we accomplished:

✅ Constructed one new street-to-mezzanine and two mezzanine-to-platform elevator connections
✅ Improved accessibility with raised ADA boarding areas, reconfigured and installed new fare arrays
✅ Reconstructed over 1,200 linear feet of platform edges and upgraded guard rails and stairs
✅ Repaired and replaced structural concrete, steel columns, steel girders, and completed major underpinning and waterproofing work
✅ Modernized station infrastructure with upgraded lighting, electrical, communications, fire alarm, MEP, ventilation, CCTV, customer information, and public address systems
✅ Enhanced station operations with new back-of-house spaces, restored granite, marble, mosaic, terracotta, and glass tile architectural finishes, new granite flooring, and restored historic entrance canopies
✅ Completed streetscape improvements including traffic signals, street lighting, watermain replacement, extended sidewalks, and paving

Collaboration at the Core of the SR-91/SR-57 Interchange Improvements in Anaheim and Placentia, California!

To carry out this $127.8 million contract, OHLA USA is working closely with all members of the project team and its clients, the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA), in partnership with Caltrans.

Using carefully phased planning and scheduling to fast-track the project, the team is making great strides in untangling one of Orange County’s busiest bottlenecks. The overlap of these two freeways makes this section of the greater Los Angeles area challenging to navigate during times of high-volume traffic.

The project targets the area where SR-91, known as the Riverside Freeway, and SR-57, the Orange Freeway, converge in the cities of Anaheim and Placentia. The goal is straightforward, even if the engineering is anything but: make it easier, safer, and less stressful for the hundreds of thousands of drivers who pass through this interchange every day.

The major work elements include the addition of an auxiliary lane to smooth connections between SR-91 and SR-57, the reconstruction of La Palma Avenue overcrossing to include standard lanes, shoulders, and sidewalks, and adding a bypass ramp at the northbound SR-57/Orangethorpe Avenue off-ramp, which will eliminate the need to merge across multiple lanes at the interchange.

To complete the contract, the project team will perform earthwork, construct bridges and retaining walls, place jointed plain concrete pavement (JPCP) and asphalt, and install new drainage systems, in addition to electrical work and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) infrastructure.

Marked by a ribbon cutting and celebratory remarks on Friday, May 1, this moment represents more than a project milestone—it’s meaningful progress toward a more inclusive transit system for all New Yorkers.

Key enhancements at Harlem–148th Street Station include:

✅ A newly constructed 6-foot-wide ADA ramp connecting the street to the platform, complete with guardrails, handrails, and integrated artwork
✅ A new 8-foot-wide ADA-compliant staircase
✅ Strategic utility relocations to enable new infrastructure
✅Upgraded lighting throughout the new access pathways
✅Replacement of exterior access doors with new, durable metal assemblies
✅ Enhanced fare control area featuring an Agent Operated Gate and ADA Farecard Access System (AFAS)

It’s National Engineers Week!

Engineering is one of the most versatile career paths, as it's common for professionals to major in one discipline, yet find themselves thriving in an entirely different branch of the field. Whether that's civil, mechanical, or even electrical engineering, proving that the analytical and problem-solving foundation of an engineering education is transferable across virtually every corner of the industry.

In keeping with that theme of the versatility of engineering, we are honoring Emile El-Kallassy, a Project Engineer at OHLA USA working on the Package 5--ADA Upgrades project spanning 13 subway stations across New York City's five boroughs. Though he majored in mechanical engineering, Emile has found a natural home in civil infrastructure work, where his daily responsibilities include coordinating between field and office teams, reviewing drawings and specifications, tracking submittals and RFIs, and attending meetings with subcontractors and designers. He describes his role as heavily centered on problem-solving -- navigating design conflicts, adapting to site conditions, and ensuring all work meets contract requirements and safety standards. The ever-changing nature of large infrastructure projects is something he finds both challenging and rewarding.

Emile offers an enthusiastic endorsement for students considering careers in engineering. He feels that the career's unique combination of creativity, leadership, and problem-solving, along with strong job stability provides diverse growth paths in design, field operations, or project management. In his view, engineering and construction offer both professional fulfillment and a lasting, visible legacy.

As the Purple Line Light Rail project moves closer to the finish line, we’re proud to reflect on the major milestones achieved over the past two months:

✓ All 28 Light Rail Vehicles arrived at the Operations & Maintenance Facility weeks ahead of schedule
✓ Dynamic testing is underway in two sections
✓ Track installation is more than 80% complete across the alignment, with all track in Prince George’s County now in place
✓ Sligo Creek Parkway reopened to traffic
✓ Overhead Catenary System wire installation to reach 50% completion
✓ Art-in-Transit installation completed at Bethesda Station

Once complete, this new 16-mile transit system will connect communities from Bethesda to New Carrollton, link riders to Metro, MARC, and Amtrak services, reduce traffic by an estimated 17,000 vehicle trips daily, and support sustainable development across the region.
