Brazos Valley Astronomy Club - BVAC

Brazos Valley Astronomy Club - BVAC We are an enthusiastic group of amateur stargazers who live in and around the Brazos Valley of Texas and get out and observe any chance we get.

The talents of our members range from purely observational astronomy, lunar and planetary observation, sketching of astronomical images to planetary and deep sky photography. We are interested in all things astronomy, sky watching, imaging, and sharing our craft and love of the heavens with each other and the public at large.

We participated in two outreaches this weekend.

We had a huge turnout at First Friday. Tom Campbell and I set up our scopes early and were able to use our solar filters to give people a peak at the Sun which had several nice size spots. Tim Cowden showed up right before dark and we turned our scopes to the moon. After a couple of hours, I turned mine to Saturn, which was a big hit for the crowd. We wrapped up around 9:30 PM and we logged about 700 viewers for the night. Tom and I handed out all of the business cards we had.

Saturday, we did Observe the Moon at Ringer Library. Again, it was Tom, Tim and I. Of course the main focus was the Moon. We got started at 7:00PM and at about 8:00PM, Tom turned his 12” Skywatcher to Saturn since his was the only tracking scope and could go with a higher magnification. Tim and I stayed on the moon. We were there till around 8:30PM when the crowd died down. The total for that night was 84 viewers. All in all, it was two successful back to back nights.

On August 19, 2025, around 5:00 AM given clear skies, there will be a conjunction of Venus, Jupiter, Castor, Pollux, and the crescent moon in Gemini in the East. At just before 6:00AM, Mercury should also rise in the East and join them. Good luck.
