🛻 MEI on the Move 🛻

We're gearing up for a busy week ahead, as we'll be at two of our favorite Texas conferences!

You'll find MEI at the 43rd Annual TEC Engineering, Environmental & Materials Management Conference in Frisco, as well as the 59th Annual TSDOS (Transmission & Substation Design & Operation Symposium) in Arlington!

If you're attending either one (or both), stop by our booth, join us for a meal, or chat with us between sessions. These gatherings are a highlight of our year, and we are always energized and encouraged by catching up with the people who plan, build, and maintain the systems that power our great state.

See you in North Texas.

🌾 Open Spaces on Field Friday🌾

In the dog days of summer, you will see our Field Service Technicians armed with hats, water bottles, and bug spray as they go out to collect field data on miles of line, sometimes near a busy highway, sometimes in an open field.

We are grateful to our FSTs who diligently inventory every week, pole by pole and obstruction by obstruction. Their work in the field fuels the decisions we put on paper.

🌩️ 2026 LCRA STORM Conference 🌩️

MEI recently attended LCRA's 2026 Substation Transmission Operation Reliability & Maintenance (STORM) Meeting at the City of Burnet Community Center!

LCRA officials and industry leaders convened to discuss the weather event outlook, load shed relaying project status, substation construction efforts, and secure network operations, among many other relevant topics. ERCOT's weatherization and inspection update put numbers to the record-breaking growth in power demand we have been experiencing across Texas, and Texas RE (Reliability Entity) analysts walked through secure maintenance practices and regulatory compliance standards.

Thank you to LCRA for hosting and for the care they put into serving their territory! Meetings like this are critical to keeping us sharp for the communities we serve.

🎉 August Work Anniversaries 🎉

Our interns are heading back to campus, the office is full, and we're settling back into the routine! Before the season gets away from us, we want to recognize the folks celebrating another year at MEI.

Every staking sheet, every construction drawing, and every project delivered on time comes back to the people who show up and do what it takes to get the job done right. Congratulations on another milestone!

🔦Next Up at MEI 🔦

As we move into the second quarter of the 21st century, we are excited to spotlight the next generation of leaders at MEI. Our future is being shaped by engineers, designers, and technicians who are advancing their skill sets, building meaningful relationships, and supporting our clients and communities across Texas.

As MEI continues to grow, we will showcase these rising contributors and share their stories. Today, we spotlight Jake Hill from our College Station team.

How would you describe your role at MEI to someone outside the company?

"I’m a problem solver with a diverse set of responsibilities that evolve with company need. I like it that way, it keeps each day interesting. For example, I could be running negotiations for a landowner agreement, fixing a drawing or permit that needs completing, repairing or collecting needed field data, or finding solutions to integrate new technology. My favorite tasks are the landowner facing ones. I enjoy negotiating deals that benefit both the landowner and the electric provider; exchanging land access in exchange for a service that genuinely improves their property."

What has working at MEI taught you that has helped shape your career?

"The only way out of a tough task is through, and it’s much better to go through something challenging with a good team rather than alone. This job has taught me the importance of the people ahead, behind, and beside you. The first 3 years had me in the field often, and that line of work is not possible without tenacious team members who will come alongside you for the hard days."

What is one key lesson you’ve learned in your role that you apply every day?

"Seek to understand and investigate deeply to grasp. You don’t learn if you don’t ask. Ask important questions, ask your coworkers for clarification when you don’t know something, and verify technical data when it seems wrong. Just because a drawing is in CAD doesn’t make it accurate, double check. Just because you have an assumption going into a project or drawing doesn’t mean you are correct, don’t be afraid to ask a coworker. We are all here to solve problems together."

Stay tuned for more as we continue to introduce the talented people who are advancing MEI and supporting the communities we serve.

Today, we spotlight Jeb Malek from our College Station team.

How would you describe your role at MEI to someone outside the company?

"I am grateful to be part of MEI's Transmission and Substation Design team, where I primarily work on protection and control packages with occasional involvement in physical design. I have had the opportunity to complete design tasks across multiple disciplines, which has given me a well-rounded understanding of the requirements and considerations involved in successful project design."

What has working at MEI taught you that has helped shape your career?

"My time at McCord has taught me valuable substation design practices through work with a wide range of utility and municipal clients. I have been fortunate to gain insight into effective project management, client relationships, and the importance of delivering quality work. The support and encouragement of my peers have been instrumental in shaping my professional growth and development."

What is one key lesson you’ve learned in your role that you apply every day?

"Critical thinking has been the most valuable skill I have developed during my time at MEI. Evaluating every design decision and its practical impact on a project is essential. Each client has unique preferences, standards, and expectations, which often influences our approach. This is why clear communication and thoughtful collaboration are among our team's greatest strengths and key contributors to successful project outcomes."

Stay tuned for more as we continue to introduce the talented people who are advancing MEI and supporting the communities we serve.

☁️ Cloudy Field Friday ☁️

In the midst of the July heat, we will never complain about a little cloud cover! Our Field Service Technicians were recently in the field, conducting inventory for an upcoming reconductor project, when the passing clouds offered a welcome respite from the sun.

The next time you find yourself out in the summer heat, take a moment to remember the dedicated FSTs who work through these conditions every day to get the job done accurately and on time!
