Earlier this year, Kia McMichael was traveling on US-24 toward Holgate, Ohio, operating her vehicle safely in the right lane with her cruise control set at 64 MPH. During her commute, she observed a black lifted Chevrolet pickup truck approaching rapidly from behind and attempting to pass her on the left. As the vehicle was passing, Kia noticed the driver was swerving and drifting between lanes. When the Chevrolet's truck bed was parallel with the front of her vehicle, she observed the driver beginning to move into her lane. Recognizing the immediate hazard, Kia remained calm and took defensive action by reducing her speed and moving toward the shoulder to create additional space and avoid a potential collision.

After passing Kia, the driver continued to exhibit erratic behavior, straddling both lanes before briefly correcting course. Moments later, the same driver repeated the dangerous maneuver with another vehicle traveling ahead of Kia.

Understanding the risk this driver posed to the motoring public, she made the conscious decision to exit the highway at the next available exit and safely contact the non-emergency police line to report the vehicle and its unsafe operation. Kia's actions demonstrated exceptional situational awareness, defensive driving skills, sound judgment, and a strong commitment to safety. By recognizing a developing hazard, taking appropriate evasive action, and reporting a dangerous driver, she helped reduce the risk of a serious accident and protected not only herself but others traveling on the roadway.

Kia's proactive approach exemplifies Vector’s highest standards of excellence and safety. While outsiders might assume the role is just spraying water and vacuuming up mud, Kody knows firsthand the skill, endurance, and grit needed to tackle labor-intensive tasks through long summer and winter shifts alike—which is why his best advice for newcomers is to invest in top-quality rain gear, durable boots, and always pack more food than you think you will need. Off the job, Kody channels his hands-on energy into riding motorcycles, building cool cars, and browsing Marketplace for projects he can't pass up.

Vector Services is proud to award the Safety Commendation Coin to Antonio Herrera. While talking to his supervisor in one of our traffic control trucks, Antonio spotted an elderly driver stranded on Alexis Road in Toledo and immediately sprang into action. He politely excused himself mid-conversation, alerted his crew over the radio, and rushed over to help push the disabled vehicle safely into a nearby parking lot. Antonio went above and beyond, proving that everyday kindness and quick action make a lasting impact in our community.

Balancing daily scheduling, client calls, and hands-on coaching, Heather thrives on the challenge of assessing complex job sites and knowing how to execute safe, efficient traffic control setups. She views her work not just as a 9-to-5, but as a vital, demanding lifestyle where crews count on each other through long, ten-hour days in every kind of weather. Outside of keeping our roads and teams safe, Heather is a devoted wife and mother who loves cheering on her kids at their sporting events, camping, heading to national tractor pulls, volunteering for Make-A-Wish, and growing her beloved Christmas gnome collection. For this week's Employee Highlight, we are proud to feature Brett Lewellen, a Hydrovac Operator who has been bringing his hard work and dedication to the Vector Services team in the Kansas City area for the past two and a half years. Operating large Hydrovac trucks, Brett utilizes high-pressure water and vacuum systems to safely expose buried utilities, ensuring everyone on the job site stays safe while preventing costly damage to critical infrastructure. While passersby often mistake his massive truck for an alien spaceship, Brett welcomes the daily curiosity as a great opportunity to educate the public on the essential nature of his safe excavation work. For Brett, the best part of the job is working outdoors alongside a phenomenal crew, a rewarding environment that aligns perfectly with his advice to newcomers to always maintain a strong work ethic and go above and beyond. When he’s off the clock, Brett stays motivated by hunting, fishing, riding his RZR on the trails, playing pool, spending time with his family, and building his own business.
