Kinda chic to be informed before taking a stance 🤷🏼‍♀️ the SpaceX Falcon 9 crash into the Moon yesterday was unintentional, but we have intentionally done this before like with the 2009 LCROSS mission. To this day, that’s some of the best data we have on the lunar surface. This impact provides another data source for studying how impacts affect the lunar surface. Something we desperately need to understand for NASA’s Artemis program!

Here’s the deal: SpaceX launched 2 lunar landers last January. Normally the upper stage (the non-reusable part) burns back up in the atmosphere so we don’t create more space junk. In this case, that wasn’t possible, and then a combo of solar activity and gravitational forces pushed it onto a crash course with the Moon.

Is it going to affect Earth? No, except you might be able to see it with a telescope!

Is it going to hurt the Moon? No (it’s a rock…)

Will it help us learn how to protect astronauts and lunar infrastructure for NASA’s Artemis program? Yes!

Don’t sleep on Starship flight tests because remember this vehicle is crucial for NASA’s Artemis program! Still a ways to go including in-space cryogenic propellant refueling but look at that progress on slide 5🤩

What happened to curiosity before condemnation?

When the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management sent out a Request for Information last week to explore the possibility of off-shore space operations including potentially recovering and launching spacecraft, it was of course immediately condemned. Accusations left and right that this is just another way to benefit Big Oil and extend damage caused by space launch into the oceans.

RFIs are simply that… seeking more information. It’s not a foregone conclusion. In fact launching from the ocean is not a new idea. But our continental launch sites are heavily strained and to keep up with demand, we need to explore other options.

Progress doesn’t happen overnight, linearly, or without curiosity.

We just raised one of the largest Series A ever for a space company, we’re hiring across pretty much all functions, and this is truly one of the coolest places to be in the industry right now. $600 million in more Moon missions to establish real infrastructure and science there supporting crewed missions!

Intuitive Machines, Firefly, and Astrobotic (now Voyager) will take 4 missions to the Moon in 2028. Each will carry 3 payloads:

1) LETS — radiation measurements
2) LRA — laser retroreflector for guidance and navigation
3) SCALPSS — 3D modeling of lunar dust behavior with engine plumes

All of this helps us learn more about our Moon and how to safely live and work on it for humanity’s expansion into the solar system!
