CONTRACTOR TIPS & TRICKS: HOW TO MANAGE 4 JOB SITES WITHOUT LOSING YOUR MIND!
Running one job site is a challenge. Running FOUR at the same time? That takes planning, communication, and a whole lot of organization.
Right now, our team at Steel Dog Structures is managing four different projects, each with its own schedule, crews, materials, and challenges.
Here’s what we’ve got going on:
🏢 JOB #1 — COMMERCIAL INTERIOR FINISH
We just passed rough framing and are moving into the next phase, with drywall prep and door and window installation underway today.
🔩 JOB #2 — STRUCTURAL BRACING
Installing structural braces for a storage sign on an existing building. When working with existing structures, coordination, proper documentation, and following engineered details are critical.
🏠 JOB #3 — FORT CARSON FAMILY HOMES
Concrete installation is underway. Timing, site coordination, inspections, and making sure everything is ready before the concrete truck arrives can make or break the day.
🚜 JOB #4 — BEHIND 11 MILE
Site preparation and septic installation are moving forward. Getting the groundwork right now sets the next phases of construction up for success.
So, how do you keep four jobs moving without being physically present at every site?
🔥 5 TIPS THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE:
1️⃣ Plan tomorrow before you leave today.
Know what each crew needs, what materials are arriving, and what inspections or decisions are coming up. Morning surprises usually start with yesterday’s lack of planning.
2️⃣ Put the right people in charge.
You cannot be everywhere at once. Give each site a reliable lead who understands the scope, schedule, quality expectations, and when to call you.
3️⃣ Use a daily job-site update.
Have each lead send a quick report with:
✅ Progress completed
📸 Photos of the work
🚧 Problems or delays
📦 Materials needed
📅 Priorities for tomorrow
4️⃣ Stay ahead of materials and inspections.
A crew standing around waiting on materials or an inspection is money walking out the door. Confirm deliveries, inspection requirements, and trade coordination before they become emergencies.
5️⃣ Know when to stop and verify.
Production matters, but safety and quality come first. If something doesn’t match the plans, an engineered detail, or the approved scope, pause and get the right answer before covering it up or moving forward.
💡 BONUS TIP: Don’t manage four jobs by putting out fires all day. Build a system that helps you see the fires coming before they start.
Being a general contractor isn’t just about knowing how to build. It’s about managing people, time, equipment, money, and expectations — all at once.
At Steel Dog Structures, we’re building more than projects. We’re building systems, relationships, and a reputation for doing things right.
