Frost developing in your attic is a result of moisture passing through your ceiling by way of pass-throughs. Pass-throughs are penetrations in your ceiling or holes drilled through the top plate of your walls for wires, plumbing vents and furnace stacks and lighting fixtures. The moisture can pass through up to 3 feet of fibrous insulation. This causes the beautiful scene pictured below. When it warms, this beautiful scene turns ugly! That frost turns to water and drips down into your insulation rendering it useless while wet and it can cause internal damage if the insulation is oversaturated causing water to come through your ceiling.
