Walk into Zaharakos in Columbus, Indiana today and you are standing inside a piece of Hoosier history that has barely changed since 1900. Greek immigrant brothers built this soda fountain into one of the most beautifully preserved parlors in the entire country, complete with a hand carved German pipe organ that still plays and a Mexican onyx soda fountain shipped in piece by piece over a century ago.

It's easy to forget how much of Indiana's small town charm was built by immigrant families who arrived with almost nothing and turned hard work into something that outlasted them by generations. The Zaharakos family wasn't alone. Greek, Italian, German, and Eastern European immigrants opened soda fountains, bakeries, and diners across the state, and more than a few of those places are still standing, still serving, still holding a town's memory together one milkshake at a time.

There's something almost sacred about a place where four or five generations of the same family have ordered the same sundae at the same marble counter. Columbus gets a lot of attention for its architecture, and rightfully so, but Zaharakos might be the most quietly important building on the whole street. 🍨
