Ohio’s Electric Cooperatives (OEC) is the wholesale power supplier and statewide services association for the 25 electric cooperatives that serve more than 400,000 homes and businesses across the state of Ohio. At OEC, we strive to educate Ohioans on the importance of maintaining a reliable, affordable and environmentally responsible source of electricity by taking an integrated approach to power generation, and serve as a resource for information about the safe use of electricity, the importance of cooperative membership, and the principles by which all electric cooperatives operate. Content shared by OEC is meant to be educational and informative, and we encourage our followers to engage in productive and respectful conversation with us and each other. However, OEC reserves the right to block and/or report users that make any of the following offenses:
• Use of language that is hateful, harassing, threatening, abusive, vulgar, racist, sexist, or discriminatory;

Ohio's Electric Cooperatives is proud to support the next generation of leaders through our sponsorship of the annual Ohio 4-H Celebration of Youth event. 🍀

As organizations rooted in the communities we serve, Ohio's electric cooperatives are long-time supporters of 4-H and the positive impact it has on young people across our state. With co-ops serving 77 of Ohio's 88 counties, we're passionate about investing in programs that develop future leaders, strengthen communities, and create opportunities for Ohio youth.

Electric co-ops are BIG on education. We view it as our responsibility to ensure our members are well educated on electrical safety, efficiency programs that can make them better users of electricity, and the many benefits of being a co-op member. Electric co-ops also work hard to keep elected officials and other stakeholders informed of issues that affect their communities.

The fifth principle that guides co-ops each and every day is Education, Training, and Information. We care about making sure our communities are responsible and educated users of electricity. That’s the cooperative difference!

There’s a saying in the electric cooperative world that if you’ve seen one co-op, you’ve seen one co-op. Every electric cooperative operates differently and in the best interest of their members. Because every community has its own unique set of needs and challenges, every co-op must operate differently to meet their members’ needs.

The fourth principle that guides the daily operations of cooperatives is Autonomy and Independence. This principle means that co-ops remain focused on their members’ needs rather than external interests. That’s the cooperative difference!

Members invest in the co-op and have a say in how that capital is controlled and used. The third cooperative principle – Members’ Economic Participation – means that any excess revenue the co-op has once operating expenses have been paid is either returned to members or reinvested in strengthening and developing the co-op.

Cooperatives are democratic organizations that are controlled by their members. Co-op members have equal voting rights and actively participate in setting policies and making decisions for the co-op. 🗳️

This concept – Democratic Member Control – is what makes up the second of seven principles that guide electric cooperatives. As a co-op member, your vote is your voice, and it can be used to shape the future of your co-op! 📢
