Can AI design your Remodel?
Today we received something fascinating from a potential remodeling client: an AI-generated design and scope package for their home project. It was the second AI package we had been emailed in less than a week.
Truth be told, the submission was pretty lovely to look at. The renderings were beautiful and gave real insight into what these folks were after. AI is becoming an incredible tool for homeowners to explore possibilities, communicate style preferences, and start getting ideas from their head into something we can talk about.
But when we looked closer at the drawings, we found major discrepancies between views, missing construction information, and details that simply could not be built or accurately estimated in the real world.
That’s the important distinction people need to understand:
AI can generate inspiration. It cannot yet replace the experience required to coordinate architecture, interior design, engineering, estimating, materials, budgeting, and construction reality.
In remodeling, every decision affects another:
• Rooflines impact ceiling lines
• Structural conditions affect layouts
• Mechanical systems affect feasibility
• Budgets affect scope and detailing
A beautiful rendering is only the beginning.
The real value of experienced design and construction professionals starts with asking the right questions to determine parameters. Then translating ideas into something functional, buildable, code-compliant, and financially realistic.
I believe AI will absolutely become part of the future of remodeling. In fact, we already use AI tools in our business today. But the human expertise behind the process matters more than ever. Because AI can generate things that look real, but can't really be built. And a human being who knows the difference needs to separate the great ideas from useless fancy.
Great design still requires human judgment.
Great remodeling still requires skilled professionals.
