One of the best financial disciplines I've ever developed is barely a discipline at all - but it acts like one.
About 30 years ago I was given the opportunity to have some money taken out of my check automatically every payday and deposited into a retirement account.
It was a very small amount for quite a while but it happened every pay period and has kept on happening for 30 years.
Imagine if instead, every payday I was handed the check and asked how much I wanted to give back to go into savings. As much as I like to think I would have been disciplined, it would have been much harder to save any money with it sitting right there in my hand while I thought about the bills that were coming due and the fun things I'd like to spend that money on.
Automated withdrawals aren't discipline exactly, but they are close enough. It's an easy decision to make when the money isn't sitting in my hand, and then it happens automatically and removes the scenario where I have to make the hard decision.
The Target Contract does a version of this for growers. Nobody is too excited about selling right now but almost every farmer has a price in mind that they'd sell today if they could.
For anyone who has a number in mind, there are two choices
1. Do nothing and hope you have the discipline to pull the trigger if that price becomes available
2. Enter a Target Contract and automate the decision to sell that price
Targets are free, they watch the market tirelessly, and most importantly they take away the pressure of having to make a clear-headed, disciplined decision when the market is moving because that decision has already been made and automated.
