Before James Spangler invented the portable vacuum cleaner, he worked as a custodian in Ohio.

He struggled with asthma and noticed the carpet sweepers of the time kicked dust back into the air while he worked. So, in 1907, he built something better using a fan motor, a soap box, a pillowcase and a broom handle.

That kind of invention is very American — practical, hardworking, resourceful. Not invention for fame, but invention because a working person needed a better tool.

Some of the most important ideas come from people simply trying to make everyday life a little better.

We honor innovative Americans that have made the industries in which we serve better.
