Some transformer warning signs you can monitor. Some need attention within days.

And some mean you clear the area right now, no triage, no second opinion.

Knowing which is which is the difference between a planned repair and an emergency outage.

Warning signs show up in five places: temperature, noise, fluid, electrical behavior, and physical condition. The mistake most operators make is reading them one at a time instead of together.

We broke down what each one means, how to sort them by urgency, and exactly what to do after you spot a problem.

A new article in the NETA World Journal makes a compelling case for why traditional dissolved gas thresholds alone aren't enough for solar and wind transformers.

Constant thermal cycling, harmonic stress, and rapid load swings naturally elevate gas levels, making standard alarm limits unreliable on their own. The solution? Gas Rate-of-Change (RoC) analysis - tracking how fast gases are generating, not just how much.

RoC spikes well ahead of critical concentration limits, giving asset owners the early warning window they need to act before a fault becomes a failure.

A must-read for anyone managing renewable energy assets.

A "blown transformer" is not a diagnosis. It's an outcome.

What failed inside the tank, and whether it can be repaired or needs to be replaced - stays unknown until someone looks.

Heat, moisture, overloading, and electrical stress do most of the damage. Often two or three at once.

We broke down every major cause, the warning signs that show up first, and the decisions that matter most in the first hour after a failure.

If you manage a facility with critical transformer infrastructure, our blog article is worth a read. Link in comments.

Ever driven past one of those plain green cabinets and wondered what's inside?

Most people never give them a second glance, but those unassuming boxes are doing some of the most critical work in our electrical infrastructure.

Meet the VFI-9. Hidden inside is a surprisingly mechanical world, gear arms in motion and oil-insulated components working together to protect the electrical systems powering our hospitals, factories, shopping centers, and universities.

When a fault hits the grid, the VFI-9 doesn't hesitate. It isolates the problem in milliseconds, preventing larger outages and minimizing downtime.

No alerts. No fanfare. Just silent, reliable protection, day after day.

It's a reminder that some of the most important technology is the kind we never notice... until it's gone.

A six-hour outage can turn into a full shift of lost output. Here's how to avoid that.

Power downtime costs money, and the grid fails without warning. Whether an outage means a few lost hours or a multi-day shutdown depends entirely on how ready you were before it happened.

We've published a guide covering everything from mapping critical loads to building a facility emergency kit.

Give it a read before the next outage tests you.

Your Facility Is Only as Reliable as the Equipment Powering It!

One of the most common things we hear from customers after a transformer failure is: “We never saw this coming.”

The reality is that many transformer issues begin developing long before operations are impacted. The challenge isn’t that the warning signs don’t exist, it’s that they’re often hidden inside the equipment.

Yet transformer health is often overlooked until failure forces attention.

We regularly evaluate transformers that have been operating for years without a single oil analysis or health assessment. In many cases, the equipment is still running fine. In others, testing reveals developing conditions that may have otherwise gone unnoticed until a costly outage occurs.

One of the reasons we advocate for annual DGA testing is simple: it allows facilities to gather meaningful condition data without disrupting operations. Instead of reacting to failures, leadership teams gain the information needed to plan maintenance, budget repairs, and make informed asset decisions.

The benefit of testing with High to Low Voltage is if an anomaly is detected, we are ready to send a repair team as soon conditions allow.

This kind of flexibility means leadership teams can make smarter and quicker decisions, keeping equipment energized and operational.

Your goal is to maintain business continuity; our goal is to keep you running.
