More capacity doesn’t always mean more equipment.

When a refinery or process plant is already operating near its limits, the first question does not always have to be:

“What new equipment do we need?”

Sometimes the better question is:

“How much more performance can we get from what we already have?”

Existing columns and separators can lose usable capacity over time because of rising pressure drop, fouled or damaged trays, packing limitations, poor distribution, carryover, or internals that no longer match current operating conditions.

In the right application, debottlenecking and internal optimization may help recover performance without replacing the entire piece of equipment.

That is why installed capacity and usable capacity are not always the same thing.
