A strong cold front is moving into South Florida starting Saturday, bringing the coolest air we’ve seen in years, with overnight lows near freezing (around 30–32°F) and daytime highs only in the 50s and low 60s. Wind chills may make it feel even colder than the thermometer shows.
⚠️ Most Florida homes’ heating systems are not designed for this:
Florida systems are built for heat and air conditioning not for prolonged cold runs, so unexpected temperature drops can make your home feel colder inside even while your heater runs. When outdoor temps are near or below freezing, indoor systems can struggle to keep up.
Here’s what you should do to prepare:
✔️ Raise your thermostat 2–3° above normal before Saturday night begins
✔️ Take programmable thermostats out of setback mode and put on HOLD
✔️ Replace or check your air filter so your furnace can breathe easier
✔️ Keep garage doors closed to reduce cold drafts
✔️ Limit opening exterior doors , every opening lets heat escape
✔️ Make sure air vents are open and unblocked (furniture, rugs, etc.)
💡 When it’s this cold:
• If you feel your home dropping in temperature even when the heater is on, don’t panic this is expected with sub-freezing nights in Florida.
• Your system may run longer than usual and take longer to recover once temps rise again.
Extra comfort tips:
• Cook soups or stews (adds warmth + humidity)
• Dress in layers and use blankets, Florida winters are short but chilly!
This won’t be “northern winter” cold, but when temperatures dip into the 30s and low 30s, even coastal homes feel it especially overnight.
Stay safe, stay warm, and share this post to help your neighbors prepare for the cool upcoming weather!
