Ever wonder how electricity gets from the power plant to homes and businesses?

It takes a coordinated effort.

The Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) acts like an air traffic controller for the electric grid, coordinating electricity flow across the region and helping ensure power is available where and when it’s needed. From there, CIPCO generates and transmits power to our 13 Member-owned rural electric cooperatives and associations, moving electricity across nearly 2,000 miles of transmission lines. Finally, our Members distribute that power to the homes, farms and businesses they serve.

We’ve had the opportunity to catch up with Cody and hear about his experience working alongside lineworkers from Iowa, Oklahoma, and Colorado to bring electricity to at least 80 homes, a school, and a health clinic in rural Guatemala. On his lunch break, he stepped away from a soccer game with the local children to call and give us an update.

What has impacted him most is the people. He says they are incredibly welcoming and grateful, even though many have so little. A local man named Rudy has helped the linemen carry equipment, shared fresh papaya from his garden, and even played soccer with the team and local kids. The community has welcomed them with open arms, and they've been cooking amazing meals for the linemen!

For Cody, the hardest part personally has been being away from family for so long. But when he looks at the progress they’ve made and the excitement in the people's smiles, it makes the long days and difficult terrain worth it.

Through it all, Cody says the most rewarding part has been seeing the progress. They started with a simple staking sheet, and now the project is becoming reality.
He’s especially looking forward to the moment the lights come on and seeing the reaction of the families and communities. He said bringing them electricity will allow them so many opportunities to grow.
We’re so proud of Cody and this incredible team. Keep up the great work and stay safe!❤️
Electricity isn’t just about lights — it brings opportunity, growth, and hope.
