Is the Beach Sneaking Into Your Living Room?
Living in beautiful Corpus Christi means we’re never far from the sand and surf—but your indoor wood floors might be paying the price! Coastal life brings two major enemies to your hardwood: Beach Sand and High Humidity.
1. The "Sandpaper" Effect
Think of beach sand as tiny, jagged rocks. When tracked inside, those grains act like high-grit sandpaper under your feet. Every step grinds that grit into your floor’s finish, leading to:
Scratches and Scuffs: Dullness that hides the wood's natural beauty.
Finish Erosion: Removing the protective layer and making the wood vulnerable to stains.
Deep Grooves: Over time, sand can even wear down the wood grain itself.
2. The "Coastal Swell" (Humidity)
Wood is a natural "sponge" that reacts to the air around it. In our South Texas humidity, your floors are constantly fighting to stay flat:
Cupping: When the bottom of the board is wetter than the top, the edges curl upward.
Buckling: Extreme humidity can cause boards to swell so much they actually lift off the subfloor.
Gapping: Fluctuating moisture levels cause wood to expand and contract, eventually leaving unsightly gaps between planks.
Protect Your Investment:
The "No-Shoe" Policy: Leave the sand at the door! Use heavy-duty mats at every entrance.
Vacuum, Don't Sweep: Sweeping can actually drag sand across the floor. Use a vacuum with a "hard floor" setting to lift grit safely.
Control the Climate: Keep your indoor humidity between 35% and 55% to prevent the "coastal swell".
