In high fire severity zones, resilient infrastructure is essential. Our latest case study highlights how Anza Electric Cooperative is strengthening wildfire resilience across its rugged Southern California service area with McWane ductile iron poles.

After starting with a pilot installation in 2018, Anza now maintains 500–600 ductile iron poles across its system, helping improve durability, simplify inspections, speed up installation, and reduce long-term maintenance demands. During one wildfire event, approximately 35 wood poles were lost, while nearby ductile iron poles remained standing and helped keep roadways clear.

“While the upfront cost is higher, we see immediate savings through reduced labor resulting from more efficient installations. Over time, their long service life more than pays for the initial investment. For National Forklift Safety Day, we want to thank our forklift drivers for their hard work, focus, and dedication to keeping our operations moving safely.

Every lift matters, and every safety step helps protect our team, our drivers, and our products. As a reminder, always follow proper unloading protocols:

Before unloading, make sure the trailer is on firm, level ground, the chock blocks are in place, the load is secure, and there are no overhead power lines in the unloading area. Never remove chock blocks, never stand on the load, and never stand or walk along the truck while straps or banding are being removed or unloading is underway.

When unloading poles, use a protected forklift or padded crane hooks, and never roll a pole off the trailer. Setting up cones to create an exclusion zone around the truck and unloading equipment is also recommended.

Plus, each ductile iron pole saves an estimated two to three trees and lasts more than twice as long as wood.

One of the McWane Way principles revolves around Excellence and one of the value statements is that “We invest time, energy and resources to get better.” Over the past few weeks, this principle has been put into action as we hosted over 20 manufacturer representatives from across the country in Ohio and Utah to spend a few days training on our product. While most of the time was spent on building a better understanding of our product, we also had an opportunity to strengthen the relationships between McWane and our rep partners.
