On this International Women’s Day, let’s celebrate the extraordinary contributions of women for the limb loss and limb difference community and for disability rights at large. Their bravery, resilience, and perseverance encourage us as we unite in advocating for inclusivity and accessibility.
Highlighted here are:
- Vala Hallgrimson, a sepsis survivor and Amputee Coalition Certified Peer Visitor and Lead Advocate, whose lived experience brings invaluable support and understanding to those navigating life with limb loss or difference.
- Judith Heumann , a renowned disability pioneer and activist who tirelessly organized demonstrations and championed legislation to empower people with disabilities, and served under two presidential administrations.
- Shima Nixon , the first African-American clinician with bilateral amputations in the O&P, dedicated to enhancing diversity and representation and providing individualized care for her patients.
- U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth , broke countless barriers as the first female helicopter pilot to lead a combat mission, was the first Thai-American woman elected to Congress, and was the first double amputee of the Iraq war, all while being a champion for disability rights.
