Last week, Broad River Electric welcomed HR professionals from electric cooperatives across South Carolina to our headquarters for a few days of learning, collaboration and connection.

Our President & CEO Chad Armstrong helped kick off the conference, bringing a unique perspective from his previous role as Vice President of Human Resources at Laurens Electric Cooperative.

The group wrapped up their time together by putting one of our seven cooperative principles, Concern for Community, into action. Teams headed out on a shopping challenge to purchase job interview outfits and accessories for women graduating from Faith Home’s residential addiction recovery program in Cowpens. 🛍️💙

We’re grateful for the opportunity to learn alongside our fellow co-ops and especially proud to end our time together by supporting women in our community as they prepare for their next chapter.

How does the power grid actually work?⚡🤔

We use electricity every second of the day, but how does it get to your light switch? The grid is a complex network that constantly balances energy supply with real-time demand.

Here is a quick look at the journey of your electricity:
🔌 1. Generation: Power is produced at generation facilities.
📈 2. Transmission: High-voltage lines carry electricity over long distances (the “interstates” of the grid).
🏡 3. Distribution: Broad River Electric substations step down the voltage to safely deliver it to your home.

Managing the Peaks 🏔️
When weather gets extreme, demand on the grid spikes. By shifting heavy appliance use (like laundry or dishwashing) to off-peak hours, we can work together to keep energy reliable and affordable for all of our members!

This quarter, Broad River Electric Charities awarded $8,800 to local nonprofits serving Cherokee, Spartanburg and Union counties.

The funding comes from Operation Round Up, where participating Broad River Electric members round their monthly electric bills up to the next dollar. Those extra pennies add up to support organizations doing important work right here in our communities.

Thank you to our members for helping make this possible!
