💎 Paragon fact of the day 💎
🥶 COLD FIRST FLOOR? THE PROBLEM MIGHT ACTUALLY BE IN YOUR ATTIC! 🏠
Most homeowners don't realize their house acts like a chimney during the winter. It's called the STACK EFFECT.
🔥 Warm air rises and escapes through gaps in your attic, around plumbing penetrations, recessed lights, and attic hatches.
❄️ As that warm air escapes, cold outside air gets pulled into the lower levels through foundation gaps, rim joists, and other openings.
The result? Cold floors, uncomfortable drafts, longer furnace run times, and higher heating bills.
And here's something many homeowners don't know:
Fiberglass insulation is NOT an air barrier! Simply stuffing fiberglass into your rim joists or blowing more insulation into your attic doesn't necessarily stop air leakage.
✅ Air seal attic penetrations.
✅ Properly seal and insulate rim joists.
✅ Upgrade inadequate attic insulation.
💡 DID YOU KNOW? According to ENERGY STAR, properly air sealing and insulating your home can save an average of 15% on heating and cooling costs!

🔷 PARAGON FACT OF THE DAY! 🏠💨
Think sealing your windows and doors is enough to stop your home's air leaks? THINK AGAIN!
📊 Research-based estimates suggest windows and doors account for only 21% of household air leakage!
The remaining 79% can come from hidden openings around attic floors, plumbing, electrical penetrations, ductwork, fireplaces, and other areas.
👀 LOOK CLOSELY AT THE PICTURE!
Those hidden gaps beneath your attic insulation can allow heated and cooled air to escape year-round!
⚠️ Here's the problem: Adding more insulation over unsealed openings doesn't stop those air leaks!
✅ AIR SEAL FIRST. INSULATE SECOND.
💰 According to ENERGY STAR, proper air sealing and insulation improvements can save homeowners an average of 15% on heating and cooling costs!

🏠🔥 AIR SEAL FIRST. INSULATE SECOND! ❄️

Did you know you can install 16 inches of insulation in your attic and STILL lose conditioned air through hidden gaps?

Insulation slows heat transfer. Air sealing stops unwanted air leaks!

Electrical holes, plumbing penetrations, top plates, and attic hatches can all allow air to escape.

⚠️ Cover those openings with insulation before sealing them, and you've just buried the problem!

💎 Paragon fact of the day 💎
Attic fans do I really need them?
Usually, no—you do not need an attic fan if you already have:
Properly sized, unobstructed soffit intake vents
Adequate ridge vents or correctly sized mushroom/turtle exhaust vents
Air baffles maintaining a clear path above the insulation
A well-air-sealed attic floor
That passive system should continuously move air from the soffits and exhaust it near the roof’s peak. A balanced system generally needs roughly equal net-free intake and exhaust area; the common guideline is 1 square foot of ventilation per 300 square feet of attic floor when properly balanced, subject to local code and roof design.
Adding a powered attic fan can actually create problems. It may pull air backward through nearby ridge or turtle vents— “short circuit”. If the attic floor leaks, it can also suck conditioned air from the house, raising energy bills and potentially causing combustion-drafting concerns. ENERGY STAR specifically warns that attic fans can pull conditioned air from the living space when soffit intake is restricted or the attic floor isn’t properly sealed.
My recommendation for Northern Illinois:
Use one primary exhaust design—ridge vents or turtle vents.
Confirm the soffits are open and baffled.
Calculate the actual net-free vent area.
Air-seal the attic floor and properly vent bathroom fans outdoors.
Add a powered fan only if calculations show the passive system cannot provide enough exhaust because of an unusual or limited roof design.
Also, a powered attic fan is different from a whole-house fan. For a normal vented attic with good soffit-to-roof airflow, more ventilation equipment is not automatically better.

🏠 PARAGON FACT OF THE DAY: Wind Washing
Unprotected soffits can allow outside air to blow through your attic insulation—pushing it away from the exterior walls and leaving cold, exposed areas behind. These cold spots may contribute to condensation, moisture staining, uncomfortable rooms, and higher energy bills.
Paragon fixes the problem by installing proper insulation stops and air baffles. The baffles keep ventilation flowing where it belongs, while the blockers hold your insulation securely in place.
✅ Proper attic ventilation
✅ Even insulation coverage
✅ Reduced moisture risk
✅ A warmer, more comfortable home
Airflow belongs in the baffle—not in your insulation!

🏠 PARAGON FACT OF THE DAY
👻 ARE THERE “GHOSTS” IN YOUR CEILING?
Those dark, streaky lines across your ceiling may be ghosting—or thermal tracking—and they can be a warning sign that your home’s thermal envelope needs attention.
When attic insulation is thin, missing, uneven, or poorly installed, areas of the ceiling can become colder than others. Air leaks and thermal bridging can make the problem worse, allowing dust and airborne particles to collect along those colder areas and create visible dark lines.
Building Science Education +1
THE PARAGON FIX: Proper air sealing + a continuous layer of attic insulation helps reduce cold spots, heat loss, and the conditions that contribute to ghosting.

💎 PARAGON FACT OF THE DAY — DON’T FORGET THE RIM JOIST!
Your rim joist can be a major source of unwanted air intrusion. Spray foam creates an airtight seal while sealing around AC lines, pipes, wires, sump pump penetrations, and other openings.
✅ Blocks drafts & outside air
✅ Helps control moisture
✅ Improves comfort
✅ Reduces energy loss
A properly sealed home starts at the edges. 💎
