I just wanted to remind everyone that summer is officially behind us, but here in Florida, we are not yet in the clear. Have your heating and cooling serviced and your annual maintenance done, so you're ready for the coming weather changes.. I just want to remind everyone that it snowed last winter.. have a safe and wonderful season.

I wanted to reach out and settle on some concerns and save you some money too... Heat Pumps have a defrost mode!
When operating properly, Heat pumps WILL grow a layer of ice on the outside unit (Especially in low temperatures). This layer of ice can grow up to a few inches thickness. If your system is working properly, it will then go into a defrost cycle which will remove (most) of that ice.
When your heat pump goes into defrost, it will make a loud sound and will most likely be steaming. The outdoor fan motor will shut off (stop turning) while in defrost mode. It may sound like its struggling but this is all normal. After several minutes of being in defrost, the ice should thaw. When it is cold (32 degrees or lower) some of the ice can stay even after the defrost cycle.
The thing to worry about is if your home is not staying warm. If it is staying warm, then your system is working properly. If your heat pump is not keeping your home warm, there is a back up feature that you can use. It is called "emergency heat". If you look on your thermostat settings, where you change it from heat to cool, you will find an emergency heat setting. By choosing this option, it will turn off your outside unit and use the electric heat strips instead. They are installed in your air handler (interior unit for split units and outdoors for package units). As long as the proper size heat strips were installed when your system was put in, emergency heat will keep you warm.

If you need M.E., or have any questions, we are always here for your Electrical and HVAC needs
