The Great POTA Antenna Debate: Tree-Hanger or Ground-Spike?

Ask five POTA activators what the "best" antenna is, and you’ll get six different answers! It usually comes down to whether you prefer slinging wire into a tree or planting a whip in the dirt.
The top contenders in every activator's pack:

End-Fed Half-Wave (EFHW): The wire favorite. High efficiency, works multiple bands, and lightweight—if you have a branch or a telescoping mast.

Telescoping / Loaded Verticals (Wolf River Coils, JPC-12, MFJ-1979): The field workhorses. Set up anywhere in under 5 minutes without needing trees.

Linked Dipole / Random Wire: Simple, rock-solid reliability, and low noise, but takes a bit more elbow grease to hoist.

What's in your park bag? If you could only bring one antenna to activate a brand new, unknown park, what are you bringing? Drop your go-to setup in the comments!

Want to see how far your signal reaches without a repeater? Check into the Central Alabama Simplex Net every Sunday night early check ins start around 6:30 PM on 146.580 MHz (FM Simplex, no tone needed).

Net control calls early check-ins first, then rotates clockwise through counties starting west of Birmingham and south of Tuscaloosa. Don't worry if you're far out—directional beam stations are on standby to help relay distant and out-of-state operators!

When grid power fails and repeaters go down, simplex communications are our first line of defense. Practice your setup this Sunday and get on the log! 73!

Hey CARC members! Are you spending more time staring at an empty waterfall than making QSOs? If you aren't using Ham Alert yet, you’re missing out on one of the easiest ways to catch the stations you actually need.

Ham Alert sends instant notifications right to your phone, email, or computer the second a specific station, band, mode, or DXCC entity gets spotted on the reverse beacon network, DX cluster, or PSKReporter.

How you can use it:
County/Grid Chasers: Get pinged instantly when an operator drops into a rare Alabama county or grid square.
Award Hunters: Set alerts for specific DXCC entities, IOTA islands, or Parks on the Air (POTA) activators.
Push Notifications: Get a ping on your phone (via Apprise, Pushover, or SMS) so you can fire up the shack only when the band is actually open for what you want.
Custom Filters: Filter by frequency, mode (FT8, CW, SSB), spotter location, and even minimum signal-to-noise ratio.

It's 100% free and takes less than 5 minutes to set up at hamalert.org.

How many of you are already using Ham Alert? What’s the best spot it’s caught for you so far? Let us know in the comments!

It was a great day for a parade! Several members of the Cullman Amateur Radio Club rode the CARC trailer through the downtown area in the Cullman Fair Parade. We were “Parade Mobile” as we waved and smiled to a great turnout!
