2025 Frontier County Turtle Race

The 2025 Frontier County Fair Turtle Race was held Friday, August 1 at 6:00 pm. The race was exciting and competitors brought some fast turtles to try their luck at winning a medal! 22 kids, ages Pre-K through high school, raced turtles in the shade at the fairgrounds in Stockville. Kids were divided into racing categories based on the grade they are going into this fall. The winners of each age category received a medal on a red, white, and blue lanyard sponsored by Tyron Lenz Construction of Curtis.

Results are as follows:

Pre-K winning turtle racer: Riata Kerchal
Kindergarten-1st winning turtle racer: Stormy Popp
2nd-3rd winning turtle racer: Sky Kerchal
4th-5th winning turtle racer: Haisley Ehlers
6th-8th winning turtle racer: Avery Oberg

The champion turtle from each race was then raced in a championship race. The fastest turtle of the Frontier County Turtle Race was raced by Avery Oberg, who received a trophy sponsored by Tyron Lenz Construction.

Attention RACE FANS!

Tyron Lenz Construction is excited to announce the sponsorship of the 2025 Frontier County Fair Turtle Race! 🐢 🏁

Date: Friday, August 1
Time: 6:00 p.m.
Location: Frontier County Fairgrounds in Stockville, NE

Youth, Pre-K through 12th Grade will be able to race a turtle at the 2025 Frontier County Fair!!

Age/Grade Brackets for the race (grade for Fall 2025)

Pre-K
K-1st
2nd-3rd
4th-5th
6th-8th
9th-12th

The winning turtle racer for each age/grade bracket will receive a 1st Place Medal sponsored by Tyron Lenz Construction. An overall winners bracket race will also be held which will award a trophy to overall champion!

Rules/Regulations (in cooperation with and guidance from Nebraska Game and Parks):

•Each contestant may bring one turtle to the race.
•A family may mark the turtles shell with a washable mark or removable tape to be able to recognize their turtle.
•The same turtle may be used in more than one age bracket race.
•The race is open to Box Turtles and Painted Turtles only (No Blandings Turtles will be allowed as they are a priority conservation species). (No snapping turtles allowed.) To learn more about turtle species, go to the NE Game and Parks Website - https://outdoornebraska.gov/
•Contestants are urged to keep turtles captive for the race for as short of time period as possible.
•Turtles should be returned to the site they were captured as soon as possible following the race.
•Painted turtles require shade and water to swim in as well as food during captivity prior to and following the race.
•Box turtles require access to shade and water and/or moist food prior to and following the race.
•No animals other than turtles will be allowed to race.
•Turtles will not be provided to you by the Frontier County Fair, contestants must bring their own turtle.
•Participation in the Frontier County Turtle Race is FREE!

Pre-Registration is available by calling Emily Lenz at 308-379-5761. Contestants may also register the day of the race beginning at 5:15 p.m.

On race day, all turtles for the age bracket will be placed into a small enclosure in the center of a large painted ring (approximately 20 feet in diameter). To start the race, the center enclosure will be removed which will release the turtles. The first turtle to cross the outer ring wins!

The medals and trophy for the Frontier County Fair Turtle Race are sponsored by Tyron Lenz Construction.

Make sure to swing by the Hansen Memorial Museum in Curtis to enjoy all of the festive trees! It’s a beautiful home and a walk through memory lane with some awesome Christmas decor! Thank you to the museum board for giving our family (Tyron Lenz Construction) the opportunity to decorate a tree a little early this year! We had a blast! 🎄

The Frontier County Fair Turtle Race was held Friday, July 26 at 6:00 pm. The race was exciting and competitors brought some fast turtles to try their luck at winning a medal! 28 kids, ages Pre-K through high school, raced turtles in the shade in front of the Methodist concession building. Kids were divided into racing categories based on the grade they are going into this fall. The winners of each age category received a medal on a red, white, and blue lanyard sponsored by Tyron Lenz Construction. 

Results are as follows: 

Pre-K winning turtle racer: Walter Banzhaf

Kindergarten-1st winning turtle racer: Carter McDaniel

2nd-3rd winning turtle racer: Charlie Dack

4th-5th winning turtle racer: Roper Rundback

6th-8th winning turtle racer: Avery Oberg

9th-12th winning turtle racer: Adrianna Estrada

The champion turtle from each race was then raced in an overall championship race. The fastest turtle of the Frontier County Turtle Race was raced by Roper Rundback, who received a trophy sponsored by Tyron Lenz Construction.

The 2023 Frontier County Turtle Race was a huge success again this year. 36 youngsters came out to race their turtles on Friday, July 28. A huge crowd assembled to cheer on the turtles and the kids! The turtles were raced according to the grade the handlers are going into this fall. The race, medals, and championship trophy were sponsored by Tyron Lenz Construction. The medal winners for each of the divisions were as follows:

- Pre-K: Eliza Meyers
- Kindergarten – 1st Grade: Daisy Mortensen
- 2nd – 3rd Grade: Darin Meyers
- 4th - 5th Grade: Maddy Oberg
- 6th – 8th Grade: Rileigh Crawford
-9th – 12th Grade: Chris Taylor

An overall championship race was held for all medal winning turtles. The 2023 Turtle Race Champion, beating all first place turtles, was raced by Eliza Meyers. Thank you to all of the families who came out to attend the race and congratulations to all racers! If you missed this year’s turtle race, plan to attend the 2024 race at the Frontier County Fair in Stockville!
