Homes keep getting fuller. More devices, bigger appliances, maybe an electric vehicle charger in the garage, maybe a generator on the way. Every one of those asks a little more of your electrical panel.

Texas had 456,667 registered electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles at the end of 2025, according to TxDOT. A lot of neighbors are thinking about adding a charger, and a lot of others are adding other big loads.

That makes this a good question to ask before adding a big load: is my panel ready for it? A licensed electrician can look and tell you.

A panel upgrade, such as going from 100 amp to 200 amp, is a service Unity Services provides. It is not always the answer, and we will tell you honestly if it is not.

What is the next big thing you are thinking of adding to your home? A charger, a generator, a new appliance? Tell us in the comments.

Fall here does not always feel like fall. The National Weather Service normals for October show an average high of 82.8 degrees, an average low of 60.9, and about 5.46 inches of rain. Warm days, mild nights, and rain keep the air humid well into the season. Indoors, McGovern Allergy suggests keeping humidity at about 30 to 50 percent. If your home feels sticky even when the thermostat says it should not, moisture in the air may be part of the picture.

Nothing here is a reason to worry. It is simply good information. If you would like someone to take a look at your system and talk it through, send us a message or give us a call anytime.

How does your home feel on a humid fall day? Tell us below, neighbors.

A little home safety check for our neighbors. It takes only a few minutes and is worth doing for your family.

Here is an easy walk through your house:

Look for a smoke alarm in every bedroom, in the hallway, in the living room, near the kitchen, and in the basement.
Look for a carbon monoxide alarm in the hallway near the bedrooms, in the living area, and in the basement. A combination alarm can do both jobs.
Keep alarms 6 feet from appliances, 10 feet from cooking appliances, and 20 feet from furnaces.
Press the test button on each alarm and listen for the sound.
Check the date printed on each alarm and follow the replacement date the maker lists.

These are general placement guides, and every home is different, so your alarm's instructions have the final say. Once you have walked through, you can enjoy the rest of your Sunday knowing it is done.

What is your reminder to check yours? Some neighbors pick the weekend the clocks change. What works for your family?

Here is something that surprises a lot of homeowners. NBC DFW reports that a clogged air filter is one of the most common reasons a heating and cooling system breaks down.

Your filter is not just a part sitting in a slot. All the air in your home passes through it, so when it gets clogged, the whole system has a harder time moving air. It also plays a part in your home's indoor air quality, because it is the first thing your air meets on its way through the system.

A good habit is to look at your filter now and then and see what condition it is in. If you are not sure what you are looking at, ask us and we will gladly help you understand.

How do you remember to deal with your filter? A calendar reminder, a sticky note on the fridge, or whenever it crosses your mind? No judgment here, neighbors.

If you have a Generac standby generator beside your home, it is easy to forget about until the lights go out. That is exactly when you want it ready.

Generac lists these among the yearly checks for a standby generator:

The unit is checked for water that has gotten inside.
The battery is checked.
A fuel leak test is performed.
The unit is checked for corrosion.
The oil and the filter are checked.

A yearly routine takes the guesswork out of it. If you have questions about your own generator, send us a message anytime.

What was the longest power outage you have sat through? Tell us your story, and what you wished you had on hand.

Your breaker panel does a quiet job for your family every day. When a breaker trips, it is doing that job.

A breaker trips to shut off power when a circuit is being asked to carry more than it should. Think of it as your home saying, "Hold on a moment." Most homeowners see it happen once in a while, and it does not have to be a scary moment.

It is a good time to call a licensed electrician when a breaker trips again and again, when it will not stay on, or when you are not sure why it keeps happening. Those are all good reasons to bring in a professional who can look at the whole picture safely.

We are glad to answer questions from our neighbors, day or night.

Which part of your house is the one that always seems to trip a breaker? The kitchen, the garage, somewhere else? Tell us in the comments.

That first cool morning always sneaks up on us. One day the air conditioning is running nonstop, and the next day somebody is asking where the heat has been hiding.

A fall heating check is a smart way to know where your system stands before you need it. Here is what it covers from Unity Services:

The thermostat is calibrated and the system gets a response test, so you know your thermostat and your heating are working together.
The electrical connections are checked and tightened.
The blower motor is checked, since it moves warm air through your home.
You receive a written condition report, so you know exactly what we found.

There is no rush and nothing to worry about. It is simply a good time to be ready before the first cold front rolls in.

What is the first thing you do when the weather finally turns? Pull out the sweaters, or head straight to the thermostat? Tell us below, neighbors.
