Cutting Corners Off High-Cost Plate? Drake’s Large Diameter Rod Cuts Material Loss.

Disc-shaped component designs lend themselves to machining from discs cut from rod. However, for larger parts, the limited range of rod diameters often required machinists to work with plate to achieve the required part dimensions. In high performance polymers like Torlon and PEEK, cutting the corners off these premium plate products has been a costly problem.

Torlon 4275 Rod from Ø 6.35mm to 152mm for Higher Wear Resistance

Drake Plastics’ high modulus Torlon 4275 contains graphite and PTFE that adds exceptional wear resistance to its inherently high strength. Compared to Torlon 4301, also a wear-enhanced PAI grade, it offers improved properties with a lower wear rate under most PV conditions. Its bearing and wear performance makes it ideal for high speed bushings and bearing cages. Torlon 4275 also exhibits higher strength and toughness than PEEK and polyimides from cryogenic temperatures to 260 C/500F.

Torlon 5030 Rod from Ø 6.35mm/0.25” to 193.7mm/7.625” for Structural Applications

Drake Plastics’ 30% glass-fiber reinforced Torlon 5030 rod is well-suited to structural applications that see high loads and temperatures. Its mechanical strength and creep resistance above 148.9°C/300°F are unmatched among high-performance thermoplastics. A CLTE similar to aluminum gives it exceptional dimensional stability. Glass-fiber reinforcement means it does not have the conductivity of carbon-fiber filled polymers, making it ideal for electrical insulators and thermal isolators. Large diameters also make it far more material-efficient than machining from plate for many design configurations.

Torlon ball bearings have the PAI polymer’s advantages of excellent resistance to chemicals and wear from dynamic loads.
