Plumber tips for the freezing temperatures coming this weekend:
1. Before you go to bed on Saturday. Fill your tubs with water.
2. Locate and turn off your main water valve to the house. If you don't know where it is - turn off the meter valve by the curb. If you don't know where that is call me 346-280-9028.
3. Open both handles on all faucets, tubs, showers and outdoor hose bibs. One handle faucets set to the middle position to drain both hot and cold.
(Reasoning) you don't know if the power will stay on while you sleep.
4. Open all cabinet doors under the sinks to let warm air into the walls of the pipes.
5. If your laundry is up against an outside wall, start a wash cycle after you turn the water off to relieve water from those pipes. You can turn it off once it starts trying to fill the washer tub with water - there won't be much coming in. If you are more handy - disconnect the washer hoses and open the valves.
5. Next morning if the power is still on reverse the process. But if there is no electricity still and temperatures are below 32 do not turn the water on.
6. Outdoor sprinkler: manually start all stations, while all stations are running go to the backflow preventer outside (the mushroom looking thing) and turn off the valve on the upright pipe under it. On the side of the backflow preventer, using a flat screwdriver, with a quarter turn open the 2 or 3 little valves to relieve pressure and leave them open.
