For Martina Merrill, LF Bioenergy's (LF) Corporate Finance Intern, the journey from clinical research to renewable energy is rooted in one purpose: improving
people’s lives.

Martina joined LF as an intern while pursuing her MBA at the University of Rochester, graduating in May 2027. She holds a degree in biochemistry from Northeastern University and a master’s degree in applied anatomy from Case Western Reserve University.

Her early career was shaped by science and patient care. As an undergraduate researcher, Martina studied cancer, fibrosis, and the extracellular matrix, learning how scientific discovery can unlock new treatment possibilities.

Before beginning her MBA, she served as a Clinical Research Associate in the Oncology Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital. There, she helped onboard patients into clinical trials and supported them through difficult moments in their lives.

“Working directly with patients taught me that every scientific or operational decision ultimately affects a person, a family, or a community,” Martina said. “That patient-first perspective continues to shape how I approach my work today.”

To Martina, moving from healthcare to renewable natural gas is not a departure from that mission. It is another way to care for people.

Her healthcare experience showed her how closely human health is connected to the environment. Pollution, emissions and climate-related challenges can affect community health. Martina wanted to move upstream and help address those risks closer to their source.

At LF Bioenergy, she contributes to work that transforms agricultural waste into renewable natural gas, supports dairy farmers and creates environmental and economic value for rural communities.

“Environmental stewardship is a form of patient care,” Martina said. “When we care for the planet, we are also safeguarding the health and well-being of the people who live on it.”

Martina brings a perspective shaped by science, medicine, research and business. Her journey reminds us that clean energy is not only about technology—it is also about people, communities and the future we share.

Outside of work and school, Martina enjoys kayaking, biking, hiking, cooking, baking, photography, travel, and reading historical fiction.

Today, we are proud to present the inaugural 𝐋𝐅 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐅𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐀𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 to Braydon Cunningham, LF5 Plant Operator, in recognition of an extraordinary act of courage.

While driving home from Utica, New York, Braydon came upon a vehicle on the side of the road that was on fire. Without hesitation, he stopped, directed a bystander to call 911, and approached the burning vehicle, where he found the driver pinned inside. From the passenger side, Braydon freed the driver and pulled him to safety.

His quick thinking and willingness to act helped save a life.

“To be honest, it was a split-second decision I had to make. I have firefighting training. I served for many years in the fire department and had the training to know how to react quickly. In that moment, I thought about my life, the person in the vehicle and their family. I just made the decision that I was going to put myself in there and pull that guy out. I didn’t know what to expect when I entered the vehicle, but I am so thankful that it made a difference and saved a life,” said Braydon.

There are moments that deserve more than a simple thank-you. There are actions that deserve to be called out, remembered and honored. 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦!

The LF Bioenergy Flame Award was created this year as an honor of distinction—recognizing individuals whose actions reflect the very best of courage, character, leadership and service. The flame represents the spirit that connects our LF family with our partners and investors who make our work possible.

As the first recipient of this award, Braydon sets a meaningful standard for what the LF Bioenergy Flame represents.

“Braydon, your courage, selflessness and instinct to help another person in a moment of extraordinary danger represent the very best of who we want to be as a company and as people,” said Laviolette.

LF Bioenergy recently engaged New York leaders on the benefits of renewable natural gas, clean fuel policy, dairy farmers, and rural economic growth.

“New York has an opportunity to demonstrate that clean energy leadership and agricultural strength 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀—𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁,” said Cyn S. French, Co-founder and EVP of Corporate Affairs at LF Bioenergy. “Our dairy farmers are already producing food, supporting rural economies, stewarding our land and natural resources, and helping provide solutions to some of our most important environmental challenges. They deserve policies that recognize their contributions and create new opportunities for long-term success.”

LF Bioenergy met with Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Jonathan Lang Secretary of the Majority Counsel & Program; Senators Shelley B. Mayer, Patricia Fahy, Pete Harckham, and Jamaal T. Bailey; and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie. Mark Murray, MBA, President of New York Gas at Liberty Utilities, also participated in the discussions, underscoring the importance of utility engagement in advancing clean energy opportunities.

In partnership with dairy farmers, LF Bioenergy transforms manure and organic waste into pipeline-quality, carbon-negative renewable natural gas.

“A strong Clean Fuel Standard does more than reduce emissions,” French said. “It creates markets for lower-carbon fuels, drives private investment into rural New York, reduces methane, and strengthens dairy farm economics. When we value what farmers and renewable energy producers deliver, agriculture, energy, and economic growth move forward together.”

French added, “This is also about energy leadership. New York has tremendous agricultural resources, organic waste streams, infrastructure, and innovative companies capable of producing more renewable energy here at home. We should be creating long-term policy certainty that encourages that investment to happen in New York.”

𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆: 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁’𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆

When Brent Jarrett, LF Bioenergy’s Plant Operator at LF1, first learned about the company, he was still balancing school and work. What caught Brent’s attention was “the bigger picture—the connection between environmental stewardship, community impact, and the opportunity to be part of something meaningful,” he said.

Seeing how waste can become a valuable resource—and how every part of the process connects—made the work especially compelling.

For Brent, LF represented the chance to be part of something greater than himself. He saw the value in taking what might otherwise be discarded and turning it into something people need every day: sustainable energy. That transformation—converting organic waste into usable energy—is one of the most rewarding parts of the job for him.

Brent’s path to LF is shaped by both military service and technical expertise. He began his career in Marine Corps aviation, completing three deployments in the Middle East before shifting his focus to family and the next chapter of his career.

He studied at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, pursuing mechanical engineering and business, and eventually returned home to New York to continue building his future.

That transition felt natural because many of the skills Brent developed earlier in life apply directly to his work at LF. His background in aviation and mechanics gave him experience with fluid dynamics, hydraulics, pumps, mixing systems, and air pressure—technical knowledge that translated naturally into the renewable natural gas industry.

He recognized early on that his skill set was a strong fit for the work LF is doing.

Brent also carries forward the leadership values he learned in the Marine Corps: loyalty, friendship, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to the people beside him.

“In the military, trust and brotherhood are everything—your life is often in someone else’s hands, and theirs is in yours,” said Brent.

Those lessons continue to shape how he works today: looking out for his teammates, giving his best every day, and staying committed to the shared mission.

His story is a powerful reminder that service, sacrifice, and teamwork leave a lasting mark long after the uniform comes off. For Brent, the mission may have changed, but the mindset has not. Brotherhood isn't just something he learned in the Marine Corps—it's a value he carries with him every day.

Jim Merrill, LF Bioenergy’s Senior Regional Manager of Operations, and members of the operations team recently welcomed Liberty New York Gas President Mark Murray, members of his team, and representatives from the New York State Department of Public Service for an on-site tour of the LF5 renewable natural gas (RNG) facility.

The visit highlighted the strong partnerships at the heart of LF Bioenergy’s work—from dairy farms to our utility and RNG offtake partners.

“Our technical expertise strengthens every partnership we build,” said Jim Merrill. “From dairy farmers and plant operators to utilities, offtake customers, and regulatory stakeholders, coordination is essential to safely and reliably producing renewable energy. Our operators are highly trained, deeply knowledgeable, and empowered to take ownership of their sites and the systems they manage every day.”

During the tour, LF5 operators Scott Franks and Braydon Cunningham shared their backgrounds, training, and technical experience as they guided the group through the facility. They explained how dairy manure is converted into pipeline-quality renewable natural gas and demonstrated the expertise required to operate the plant safely and effectively.

The group noted the level of technology, engineering, and safety discipline built into the facility. For several attendees, this was their first visit to a dairy RNG plant, making the tour especially valuable and educational.

Mark Murray echoed the importance of strong partnerships and operational excellence. "What continues to impress me about the LF Bioenergy team is the professionalism, technical expertise, and strong safety culture demonstrated every day. The partnership between Liberty and LF Bioenergy is a strong example of what can be accomplished when agriculture, innovation, utilities, and regulators work together toward a common goal. We greatly appreciate the New York State Department of Public Service for taking the time to travel to the region and see this work firsthand. Site visits like these are invaluable because they allow all of us to learn from one another, improve operations, and help shape meaningful policies and regulations that support New York’s energy, environmental, and economic goals,” said Mark.

For Kathleen “Katie” Cross, P.E., Senior Technical Solutions Engineer at LF Bioenergy, that quote captures what first drew her to this purpose: creating something significant for the next generation.

“The most meaningful contributions we undertake are not always for ourselves. They are for those who come after us. For the small family farms that have fed this country for generations. For a food system and a planet worth inheriting,” says Cross.

Katie’s path into agriculture began at NC State University, where Sigma Alpha, the professional agricultural sorority, and the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering opened her eyes to just how vast and vital this industry truly is.

Her curiosity only continued to grow. It deepened the moment she witnessed firsthand the hard work and quiet dedication of a farm family. In that moment, she knew this was the industry she was meant to support.

Today, Katie Cross, PE channels that purpose into renewable energy and biofuels, helping turn innovation into practical solutions for family farms navigating one of the most challenging financial environments in memory.

At LF Bioenergy, she helps evaluate existing and prospective farm-based renewable natural gas projects across fuel and environmental commodity markets, ensuring each project delivers meaningful environmental impact while creating economic value for our investors and farm partners.

She views this role as part of something larger than clean energy. It is about helping small family farms navigate one of the toughest economic climates in memory with innovative, proven solutions that protect their livelihoods, strengthen their legacies, and support a more sustainable, resilient future for the next generation.

Meet Matt Stearns, 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝘁 𝗟𝗙𝟭, one of the people behind the work at LF Bioenergy (LF). For Matt, joining LF was about more than a job. It was a chance to come home to Louisville, work near the family and community that mean everything to him and be part of something that makes a real difference. He was drawn to LF by 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲, 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀, and 𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆, and its excitement about building something that helps both the environment and the local community—including support for local organizations and businesses in the area. That combination of purpose and people made LF stand out immediately.

Matt’s background in aluminum plants in Indiana and New York made LF’s operating environment feel like a natural fit, but what he found here was different. At LF, 𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲. He is trusted with ownership of the site, encouraged to help shape operational excellence, and treated as more than just a number. That sense of ownership has helped him grow in confidence—particularly in electrical work, vendor coordination, and collaboration across the team.
