Did you know that cranes used to be powered by people on treadmills? They looked like large hamster wheels on the side of the crane, and workers would climb them to move the load. Rigging for these involved a lot of gears and pulleys to minimize the load on the wheel.

How do you move a lighthouse? When Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was moved, the team used hydraulic jacks to slowly raise the structure from its foundation. The building was stabilized and transported on a frame supported on dollies traveling on steel tracks.

Loads that require the expertise of a rigger can be incredibly heavy, which means you can’t take chances when it comes to the rigging gear. An experienced rigger will make sure that the right gear is chosen to match the load and the job.

In 1853, Robert Stirling Newall, the Scottish engineer who invented machine-made wire ropes, developed two crucial mechanisms, the brake drum and cone device. These components allowed the first deep-sea transatlantic cable to be laid in 1866.

The numbers in a wire rope sling used for rigging jobs (6 x 19 and 6 x 36, for example) are used to denote the number of wires within a strand (the first number) and the number of wire strands wrapped around the core (the second number). Your rigging team will choose the best wire rope sling for the job.

Did you know that when determining the working load of a four-legged chain sling, the number of legs entered into the formula is three rather than four? This is due to the difficulty of rigging a quad leg chain sling so that all legs share the load equally.
