Danbury’s Charter Revision Commission held its required public hearing, and residents filled Council Chambers for more than two hours. People of every political persuasion, along with several public officials, offered detailed, substantive feedback on the draft charter. The message was unmistakable, the draft needed further work before being sent forward. But instead of taking that testimony seriously, the Commission immediately reconvened and advanced the draft unchanged to the Town Clerk and the City Council. In doing so, they disregarded the very purpose of a public hearing, to listen, evaluate, and adjust when the community raises legitimate concerns.

For years, Connecticut has operated under one of the most lopsided political power structures in the country. Democrats hold overwhelming majorities in both chambers of the General Assembly while also controlling the Governor’s Office. Elections still occur, debates are still held, and bills are still voted upon, but when one political party possesses enough votes to determine nearly every outcome, the system of checks and balances begins to erode.
Prolonged one-party dominance creates two fundamental problems. First, it becomes easier for the majority party to advance sweeping legislative agendas with little need to compromise, negotiate, or meaningfully engage opposing viewpoints. Policies that might otherwise be moderated through bipartisan debate can instead become law with limited resistance.
Second, one-party dominance weakens accountability. Every democracy functions best when power is questioned, proposals are challenged, decisions are scrutinized, and public officials know they will be held accountable. Without meaningful political competition, oversight becomes weaker, government grows less transparent, and there are fewer incentives to root out waste, demand competence, or correct failures.
Connecticut has increasingly experienced the consequences of both. One-party rule has reshaped public policy while also fostering a culture in which accountability too often takes a back seat to political convenience.
The Consequences of Unchecked Legislative Power:
When legislative majorities become large enough that dissenting voices can simply be ignored, public debate becomes a formality rather than a meaningful part of the legislative process. Major policies can move forward even when significant portions of the public, municipal leaders, taxpayers, businesses, or affected communities raise serious concerns. Public hearings are held. Testimony is given. Yet too often the outcome appears predetermined long before the first witness ever speaks.
Government should never stop listening simply because it has enough votes.
