Why Is Everyone Focused on Checking Parts?

95% of the companies in the IMTS Metrology Pavilion sell products to check part quality. A handful of these companies sell products that check the machines that make the parts.

This is a disconnect.

No matter how often or how well you check your parts, if the machine has geometric errors, those parts are not going to improve. Why let the quality of your parts tell you it’s time to check your machines for geometric errors?

There is a better way.

Come check out our geometric alignment lasers and see how we can help change your quality process from firefighting to fire prevention.

When should you check machine geometry?

Don’t wait until your parts tell you there’s a problem.

Machines move, wear and change over time. Components wear. Foundations settle. Even a machine that is still producing acceptable parts may no longer be where it was when installed.

Checking machine geometry should be part of keeping the machine capable of making good parts; not the last step after scrap, repeat corrections and troubleshooting.

Modern laser alignment systems make geometry checks faster, helping manufacturers verify the machine before problems start accumulating.

One of the systems we will be highlighting for IMTS 2026 is the L-703S 4-Axis Lathe and Turning-Center Spindle Alignment Laser System.

Lathe and turning-center checks can be slow with test bars and indicators, especially when the machine is large or the tolerance is high.

The L-703S is built to be user friendly for verifying spindle alignment and related machine geometry, offering real-time 4-axis alignment data, giving teams a faster and more repeatable way to confirm the geometry behind the cut.

Bore alignment gets expensive when the setup depends too much on operator skill.

Hard-to-reach bores, long centerlines, and outdated measurement methods can make the job tedious, time-consuming, and difficult to repeat.

A better bore alignment setup reduces the amount of operator technique required and makes it easier to get repeatable results from one job to the next.

The goal isn’t just to get the alignment done. It’s to finish the job with confidence that it’s right and move on to the next one.

Geometry problems rarely make themsleves known easily. They usually show up as longer setups, more scrap, poor finishes, tool wear, or parts that become harder to hold tolerance.
By the time someone starts checking machine geometry, your process has often been fighting the problem for weeks or months.

If you are coming to IMTS, stop by Booth 134629 and let’s talk about how we can help you proactively find geometry problems before they show up in your parts. Checking geometry on machine tools is not time consuming as it used to be. There is a better way.

If we can help you find the cause before the scrap pile grows, then the trip was worth it.

Offsets are useful. They are not a substitute for stable machine geometry.

When the same correction keeps coming back, or the machine needs more compensation than it used to, the issue may be deeper than the tool, program, or setup.

Geometry verification helps confirm whether the machine reference is still trustworthy.

Squareness checks are just as important as machine leveling but a whole lot more difficult.

Standard methods, such as granite squares, require more of an “art” than science and typically require a crane to install.

While this gets the job done, it is time consuming and difficult to position the square where you need it.

It also needs to be aligned to the machine axis, requiring high skill.

One of the biggest limitions of granite squares is you can usually only measure a short part of the overal travel of the axes you are trying to check for squareness.

Hamar Laser’s alignment systems solves these problems, making measuring squareness a breeze and easier for even the lower skilled techs to get good results.

A machine can be level and still not be square.

That matters because squareness problems can show up as longer setups, harder-to-hold parts, and compensation that keeps changing from job to job.

Good geometry verification separates one condition from another, so the correction is based on the actual machine error.

Machine geometry problems rarely stay isolated.

A spindle-axis error becomes taper.

A straightness problem becomes uneven wear.

A squareness issue means more setup time.

The machine may still run, but the process becomes less predictable.

That is why geometry verification matters. It helps separate a tooling problem from a machine reference that has quietly moved.
