This valley needed to be tarped to stop water intrusion from the ice dams this winter.

The house was experiencing mold growth and we came in to stop it at the source. Our partners at puroclean are handling mitigation before my interior repair team comes in.

This roof didn’t leak during the 2024 August storm we saw in Connecticut but like so many others, ice won the day.

We will be replacing this roof and properly sealing the roof to wall and valley to ensure this never happens again.

That’s some nice work.

What does it take to do a roof replacement correctly?

Why are the images in this post relevant?

It comes down to attention to detail and having the tough conversations up front.

Most roofers do not remove siding to install ice and water shield. If they did half of the roofs I am repairing this spring wouldn’t need me.

It’s not an extra step, it’s winter proofing the home. Does it cost more? It does, but not as much as repairing the inside of the home after a leak.

The skylights aren’t leaking right now.. yes but this is a 30+ year roof. It makes sense to match the life of the accessories to the roof so you’re not doing more costly repairs in the future.

We also replace all flashing, it’s a line item for each type. We do that because the roof needs to be properly sealed and flashing never really sets right once it’s been disturbed.

These are some items and questions to talk to your roofer about before you sign a contract. You want these things in writing, not just a verbal promise.

Pre install inspection of your landed materials matters. Here’s what was wrong with this delivery…

Two different years on the manufacture date. That can lead to small differences in granule patterns. If you see a roof that seems to have subtle “stripes” that’s usually why.

Damaged facing edges on the shingles due to poor handling.

If they’re not good on the pallet they won’t be good on the roof.

This supplier just delivered their last load of roofing supplies for me due to this. I had new materials delivered.

Here at one of my clients houses in Bethel with a roof that should’ve never needed to be replaced during the life of the solar if the solar company had had the integrity to tell the homeowner exactly what’s going on with their home.

The roof's composition, featuring 24-inch on-center rafters, 3/8 plywood, and two layers of shingles, is a critical aspect to consider.

A responsible company would address these factors to prevent the need for a new roof midway through its expected lifespan, as is the situation here. The home's solar panels, installed around 10-15 years ago, were placed on a two-layer roof that was already aging, and now requires replacement, highlighting the oversight of the original solar company during their initial inspection.

good evening! Apologies for the absence but I am working on north of $1,000,000 in repairs from recent storms.

As we thaw out (monday snow notwithstanding) i recommend having the roof and especially the gutters on your home checked. on the gutter side i have seen many that have bent and will not properly remove water from the system after the weight of the ice.

If you are in COnnecticut or ajoining New York areas I can have a crew come inspect for you if you have concerns.

As a note, we are 25 followers away from me being able to share live inspection information to help you with your own home. please ask afriend to folllow too!

not the ideal time to post but here i am working on six ice dam repairs.

please either have someone clear your roof or at least take steps to break up ice dams.

I can have more info later but I am 200 roofs in and as someone who has dealt with roof leaks it isn't a great situation to deal with.

stay dry out there!

How can I tell this Easton home has two layers of shingles?

When you know what to look for it becomes easy.

It also tells me the materials under the roof likely are not up to current day code.

I get a lot of questions about why replacing your roof before solar makes sense most of the time.

In this news clip i can tell that roof is well into its service life (quick hack, roofs under 10 years old almost never have staining)

Who you use matters, I’ve see many cases where a solar company will mount panels to everything (i am surely not referencing the company in the feature)

Part of the blame has to go to the owner for not doing diligence but she isnt an expert, the shame here goes to the solar rep, inspector amd company.

I’ve lost probably 13 jobs in the last 12 months because i refused to mount onto very aged roofs. Sorry not sorry
