Already a warning near Sydney, but keep an eye on the cell south of Greenville. Hard to get a great look at it with the local NWS radar out of commission, but it looks like this one may be showing some signs of rotation. This is getting to the edge of the Indy radar’s range, so lots of uncertainty, but certainly a strong cell heading toward northern Montgomery and southern Miami counties

Tornado warning NW of Crawfordsville, IN. Lots of energy in some of these storms with cloud tops north of 45k ft.

Stay weather aware tonight as these storms move into western Ohio. I suspect that areas south of I-70 will primarily be at risk for high winds, hail, and localized flooding since the atmosphere will have some chance to cool a bit as we lose daylight. Still, there’s plenty of heat hanging around and sufficient CAPE / shear to have all severe threats potentially on the table.

Storms rolled in too late last night and too early today to make much use of any instability. Nothing but a sloppy mess today. Definitely will be interesting to see the final rain totals for the area once the last of this rain rolls through.

It’s been a while since I got back to chasing, but I decided to take a drive out to Chillicothe this morning. Tracked a developing cell up to Lancaster where I had to pull back just as a tornado warning was issued. There are some places I don’t take the risk to solo chase in. Hills, winding roads, and dense tree cover can get real sketchy in that part of the state while you’re trying to multitask radar analysis, route planning, and, of course, focusing on the actual driving. Better to come back and chase another day. With the way this year is starting, it looks like this could be one heck of an exciting storm season! Game on!

As always, no tornadoes when I go chasing 😂… Still, I had a fun little drive over to the Indiana / Ohio border and got some awesome shots of the storm front on its approach. Totally worth driving back through torrential rain and navigating a downed tree / power line on State Route 725.

Round 2 is looking like the real deal so far. This system is producing cloud tops as high as 50kft, so we’re talking about really strong updrafts in these cells. We’ll see how well this system holds together as it approaches SW Ohio, but if it all holds up then significant hail and a tornado or two could definitely be possible.

Cool views on the backside of the first round of storms. Getting ready for the next round passing through southern Indiana right now. The fun isn’t over by any means, so stay weather aware this evening.

Looking like early to mid afternoon for some stronger storms to kick off based on the models and CAPE developing this morning. Plenty of moisture and steady heating throughout midday, so with the elevated instability we could definitely be in for some rough storms today. Stay weather aware, especially from about 1pm onward.

Still a couple hours before these storms reach Ohio, but this system is the real deal. Multiple tornado warnings in western Indiana with solid rotation on radar and cloud tops in excess of 50k feet!

Timing for the arrival of tonight’s storms has been updated. The latest models indicate that a line of severe thunderstorms will approach the Indiana / Ohio border around 11pm. Plenty of CAPE to work with and forecasted cloud tops as high as 50k feet, so we’re talking significant updrafts. Hail, strong winds, and the potential for tornadoes are definitely in play, so stay weather aware and be ready to make it to your safe place if a warning is issued for your area.

Looking legit for some severe weather and possible tornadoes this evening. Early rain showers are moving out of the area on a NE track, leaving much of Indiana open for plenty of surface heating while having more than enough moisture to work with. Forecast models are showing elevated CAPE developing this evening as well, so we should see more atmospheric instability as the day moves on… Southern Indiana, Northern Kentucky, and SW Ohio look to be at the highest risk for tornadoes if the current trends continue.
