SPACE EXPLORATION MERIT BADGE CAMPOREE AT WACO MUSEUM 4/18
Following are the details for the Camporee being held at the WACO Museum in Troy. I am still looking for volunteers to help, so please contact me if you're available.
LOCATION
The Camporee is located at the WACO Air Museum, 1865 S County Road 25A in Troy, OH. The site is an active airport so special precautions will need to be taken (see below).
BUILD/FLY
This event is a build/fly. There will be no more than 48 easy to build Estes Cosmic Ray rockets, and they will fly on A8-3 motors. 30 of those rockets will be used to help Scouts who signed up in advance earn the Space Exploration Merit Badge. These 30 rockets will have to fly TWICE to satisfy the requirements. The remaining 18 rockets will be built by other Scouts and will fly only once.
BUILD AND LAUNCH SETUP
The build will take place indoors in the new Education Center. Scouts will be divided into groups of 6-8. The range will be set up on the far south end of the property, just below the Museum and the Education Center. This also happens to be in the vicinity of the south end of the runway. We will use two (or possibly 3) sawhorses and the Wilson remote launch system.
SCHEDULE
I will gather most of the material we will use for the launch on Friday evening. Volunteers can gather at eRockets at 800am and we will proceed to the site shortly thereafter. The rocket build will begin at 930am after introductions and orientation. There should be some adults available to assist you. We will probably prepare the rockets for flight (wadding/engines/igniters) during the build rather than outside.
The weather prediction is not good for the entire day, so we will have to play it by ear for the launch. We may be able to fly shortly after the build, or we may have to wait until after lunch (noon to 130pm). I understand this is inconvenient for us but this is the hand Mother Nature has dealt us.
PRECAUTIONS
The airport will be open to aircraft traffic throughout the day. When the launch is started, the LCO will need to have the club's radio tuned to the WACO CTAF frequency and listen for aircraft entering the pattern. The likelihood of a conflict is probably low (the weather discourages flying in open-cockpit aircraft) but we cannot completely rule it out. We will need to set up and strictly enforce a crowd control line and only allow those who are retrieving their rockets past the line. Also, with the expected rain, please be equipped to protect yourselves and the launch equipment from getting wet. An extra pair of shoes is a good idea.
POSSIBILITY OF LAUNCH CANCELATION
There is a non-zero chance that the high winds and rain may prevent us from flying altogether. If this happens, I will dismiss WSR members to tear down the range and leave, and the Scouts will work contingency plans. I will be staying for the duration of the event as I'm signing off other requirements for the Merit Badge.
FINAL NOTES
This could be a difficult event, but that seems to be when we perform at our best. I greatly appreciate your help. I am considering your safety first and if the weather proves too problematic, I'm not afraid to pull the plug. If you have any questions, please contact me.
