This house is gone, but found a little surprise under the old laundry room. An old 16’ deep well. The stone shaft is still perfect. I can’t imagine hand digging this, especially in sandy soil that would keep caving in on you. The stone walls forming the circular wall are about as perfect as they can be. It’s amazing what people used to build with hand tools and hard work. I’m impressed.
As for us, we should be back here on Tuesday to start forming footings and to get this house going. It will be a house that, in all respects, pays tribute to the family home that had been here since the 1880’s. The care that has been put into honoring the former house is exactly what this turn over needed. Trying to rehab and modernize the home would have been far too cost prohibitive. I’m glad that we can be a part of this one, and know that we can bring the spirit of the old into the new.
